“It wasn’t like here, and not because the people around me were ordinary instead of bears. Most of the time the people around me were monsters. They really were. There was nobody there who loved me, nobody who cared at all what happened to me. I didn’t have parents. At best I had guardians and at worst? At worst I had grownups who should have known better than to treat me the way they did. There was a lot of violence. A lot of death, a lot of s*x. It wasn’t good. Nothing was ever good until I got here.”

“What about here made it good?”

“I was so afraid, Joshua. I was so afraid and still I came because it was better. Doing this unknown thing was better than staying where I was and I met you and Andrew. You’ve both been kind, but you. You really look at me. Nobody has ever done that before, not with me. And I know that you understand what it means to have pain. Andrew told me about your sister.”

“He loved her too, you know? He really did.”

“I know,” she said, climbing out of the chair and moving softly to where he sat, kneeling humbly right in front of his feet, “but she was your sister. There’s a softness to you, something you keep secret deep down inside of you. It makes me feel safe. It makes me feel like I’m home.”

Her hands were on his knees and her face turned up to his and before he really understood what he was doing he was leaning in to her, his hands on the sides of her hot face and his lips exploring her mouth with a hunger that was almost scary.
