The Head sat heavily behind his desk and stared at his desk. He looked up at Nathan, who was also stunned by the turn of events. “Go see your, girl, Nathan, and tell her everything has been handled.”

“What about Marissa?”

The Head sighed. “I have no idea. But she can’t be allowed to undermine our people like that. She put us all in danger with her actions.”

“I’m sorry, boss, but I felt the same way when that idiot human told me what she’d done.”

“I guess you still aren’t interested in taking the post?”

“No sir. I like my position with the Guard as it is.”

“I figured. Go see Lucy,” the Head said as he swiveled his chair to gaze at the painting behind his desk. Nathan walked out, quietly shutting the door behind him.

Nathan was waiting outside for Lucy when her shift ended. Kayla saw him first and elbowed her in the side. She looked up at the hit and saw him. She smiled at Kayla.

“Nathan, I’d like you to meet my best friend, Kayla,” Lucy introduced. “Kayla, this is Nathan.”

They shook hands, and Kayla said, “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Lucy, I’m going to walk home with Robbie. Y’all have a good night.” She very obviously winked to Lucy as she ran after the waiter, calling his name.

Lucy looked at Nathan and rolled her eyes at her friend’s silliness. “She’s very happy we met,” she explained.

“I am too,” Nathan retorted and kissed her. “May I escort you home?”

“Of course, dear gentleman,” Lucy replied and took his hand. He led her to his car and opened her door for her before walking around to the driver’s side.

“We handled the Austin issue,” Nathan said as he started the car.

“What happened?”

“Marissa talked him into going to the press,” Nathan explained.

“What?” Lucy exclaimed. “Why?”

“Marissa and I were in a relationship that ended badly. She chose her career over me. You’re the first person I’ve been interested in since her, although I had no idea she was that jealous.”

Lucy shook her head. “I can’t believe she’d do something like that.”

“Me either. She jeopardized her career to hurt you.”

“She’s in that much trouble?”

“Oh yes. She’s being held in the detention center until it has been decided what to do with her.”

“I wonder . . .” she mused aloud.

“What’s that?”

“Oh nothing.” Lucy wondered if Marissa would be banished as her mother had been.

As they pulled up to her apartment, she turned to him. “Nathan, would you like to come upstairs?”

He smiled at her. “I’m so glad you asked. I didn’t want to have to invite myself, but I was going to if you didn’t invite me.”

She laughed and then turned serious. “I . . . I kind of wish you would stay with me every night.”

Nathan’s face brightened. “I feel the same way.”

Lucy tilted her head and smiled. “How about a little car making out before we go upstairs for the real show?”

“Let’s do it!”

She leaned towards him. “We’ll talk about that every night thing in the morning.”

“Yes ma’am.” Their mouths fused and felt like forever.

The end.
