Her face split into a sunny smile. “Scare me off? Never! I love you too, Ricardo. I was afraid to tell you because I thought you would run for the hills.”
He chuckled. “I suppose we were both very foolish. Never be afraid to tell me anything, my love. I won’t hide anything from you either.” He planted a kiss on her mouth. When he tried to pull back, she cupped his face and kissed him with ardor. When she released him, they were both panting.
He smiled. “Now that we have confessed our undying love for one another, does this mean you’ll agree to moving in with me? You spend most of your time here anyway.”
She attempted to pull away with a groan, but he held her tighter. “We’re not going to argue about this again, are we?”
“What is there to argue about? Just say yes.” He feathered kisses along her neck and shoulder. “Say yes.”
“No.”
“Fine. You don’t like this place? We can get a house, anywhere you like.”
“Ricardo, no. Not yet. We’ve only been together for three months. You should wait and make sure that’s what you really want.”
“I’m a man of a particular age. It doesn’t take me long to know what I want. Maybe it is you who isn’t sure.”
Kyra rested her palm on his chest, feeling guilty for the hint of hurt on his handsome face. “It’s not that at all. I’m sure that I want you, that I’m in love with you. I just think it’s too soon. Maybe if I had grown up differently, I wouldn’t feel this way. I’m just so used to being…”
“Alone. Independent. You’re still afraid that I might leave, like your mother, your father. Your sister.”
She sighed. “Yes, everyone in my life has a tendency to disappear. Even the woman I considered my best friend is gone, in a way. There’s a possibility that something might take you away from me too. What if you decide to leave New York and go back to Italy? You do have your other business there. Your entire life is there.”
“That wouldn’t come between us, Kyra. I promise. We would find a way to make things work. Besides, I have every intention of making New York my home. Anywhere you are is my home.”
She nibbled her lower lip, touched by his words but she still couldn’t do it. “Please, give me more time. Try to understand.”
His disappoint was evident but he nodded. “I do understand.”
“Thank you.” One of the many advantages of dating an older man was his maturity. Kyra was relieved that Ricardo was always so understanding. “Ask me again when we reach the six months’ mark?”
He grinned. “You bet I will.”
“You’re understanding makes me so hot for you right now,” she purred.
“Is that so?”
She giggled and nodded. “Let’s go inside.”

Kyra’s head rested on his shoulders and soon her eyelids drooped. “Keep your eyes open for me,” Ricardo whispered as he stood up with her in his arms. “I need to get you cleaned up.”

Her hands wound around his neck. “How do you know I was falling asleep?” She asked drowsily.
“Your breathing pattern changes when you are falling asleep. I don’t have to see you to know you are falling asleep.”
“The fact that you know that is a tad creepy.”
He strode to the bathroom, chuckling softly. “I pay attention to you, my love.”
She smiled tiredly. “Okay, maybe it’s not so creepy.”
