“Yeah, as long as you don’t have a water bed,” she chuckled.

“I love the way you’re so accepting of all this, sweetheart,” he told her, brushing his knuckles under her chin. “How are you able to remain so calm?”

“I’ve dreamed of this my entire life—of somehow becoming part of the sea and living in it,” she explained. “I thought that Oceanica was going to be my ultimate, the thing I was working towards, but now I can see it all much more clearly. This was always meant to be my destiny. You were always meant to find me somehow and make me complete. I don’t understand the reasoning behind it all, I just somehow know it. Does that make any sense?”

“I wonder if you’ll manifest seer qualities once you’re mature,” Mark said speculatively. “It’s not uncommon among our people. Perhaps somewhere in your bloodline you already have an ancestor who was among our kind. It would explain why I feel so attracted to you, and it might go a long way towards explaining the antics of your attackers, too. I must consult the oracle about this. We cannot leave such knowledge unexplored.”

Mark kissed her again, then gently pushed her through the portal and held out his hand, absorbing the light back into it. He turned around and stalked across the field and back down to the shore, then out into the water. He quickly swam into the deeper water, transforming as he began his descent. His first objective was to head back to the site of the incident to search for clues. His second was to pay his father a visit to see if the old one had learned anything since they’d left him.

It was certain that the king would want to know who had been involved in the attack on his son. Perhaps they’d come from a rival city, or had been sent there by the sea witch herself. Either way, they needed to know who or what they were dealing with if he wanted to keep Chelsea safe from any further attacks.

Staring out over the cresting waves, with the moonlight pouring down to cause a lovely glow, Mark realized that he would do practically anything to keep Chelsea safe. And now that it was obvious she wasn’t going to reject her new fate, another type of golden glow welled up inside of him. After centuries of being on his own, finally he’d found somebody he could share all of this with. And he’d be damned if he would ever let her go.
