Instantly she felt the speed ramp up; still not as fast as the flesh-and-blood bulls that she’d seen flashing and spinning like cyclones in the arena, no, but fast enough that each movement came before she had time to know it was on its way.
All she could do is to go with it, balance and instinct combining into an unthinking response; and she didn’t even know that she was laughing as she spun and rocked back and forth in time with the automaton – didn’t know she was laughing until finally it bucked one too many times in short succession and sent her tumbling over its left shoulder, sprawling on her back on the softness below.
Oh man! That felt amazing! That’s why – THAT’S why people do this!
“Now that was pretty damn good for a first-timer,” Steve’s tall angular silhouette filled her vision above her, like her shadow at evening rising to greet her. “And that time, I’m not just saying it so you won’t feel bad.”
“I feel pretty damn amazing, as it happens.” She saw him so clearly as he knelt down by her side; every tiny fine line at the corners of his bright blue eyes, the dark stubble beneath his skin, the handsome bones of his face and the wide shoulders and strong body that let him stand so tall and secure. She saw him so clearly – and it was almost as if it were the first time she’d ever seen him, hazed in the veil of bright lights that danced before her eyes as the blood raced and pounded through her brain and body. “Steve?”
“Yes?” She heard the soothing low rumble of his voice grow nearer as she sat up, her chest heaving as she dragged in deep breaths of the same cooling air that caressed her damp skin. “What is it?”
“Nothin’ much,” she murmured as she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer. “I just – I really wanted to-”
Her words were cut off as his lips found hers; and she didn’t know if she had kissed him, or he had kissed her. It just felt so natural, as natural as moving her hips to counter the motion of the mechanical bull. She pulled him down on top of her, and he didn’t resist; even though he was much bigger and stronger, she could almost fool herself into believing that he had no power to resist.

And then, it was over; slowly winding down as awareness returned, every nerve and sinew filled with the blissful memory of ecstasy as she collapsed forward onto him, knees shaking as her breath caught in her chest.

“We needed that, I think.” His voice rumbled through his chest and she felt it, as much as she heard it. One of his hands stroked her hair, the other moved up to rest against the small of her back. “I know I did.”
“I can hardly breathe!” Even through her struggle to take in each lungful of air, she couldn’t stop herself from pressing her lips against his shoulder, his neck, and finally his mouth, a flurry of feather-light kisses. “That was – it was wonderful.”
“Can’t argue with that. I feel better’n I have in a long time.”
She collapsed back into him again, her whole body moving with the rise and fall of his chest. She would disentangle from him, soon; would have to. But not yet.
Not just yet.
