Prologue

Angela Carter had always been one to follow whatever the weatherman said. If he said to bring an umbrella, she would do exactly that even if there was no cloud in the sky and walking around town with an umbrella made her seem ridiculous. For her, it was about following the rules. If there was a hurricane warning, she was the first one to barricade her windows and secure her furniture. Her following the rules was something she learned as a child, a behavior drilled into her mind thanks to the upbringing she had. But somehow, everything she had ever learned seemed to go right out the window when she met him. He was the kind of man who sent chills down your spine. She could still remember the first time they met. Everything about him screamed ‘bad idea.’ From the good looks donned in perfect flashy jewelry to the way he ordered bottle service as if his life depended on it. She was not of his world. All she could do was brush shoulders with people in that world. She did not know what it was about him that threw her off balance. Whatever it was, she just could not wrap her head around it and it just drove her nuts in a good way at first, but now, all she felt was anxious especially when he was around his friends. It was like having a different kind of thrill. She never knew what it was about him when he was around his peers. It was like he completely changed to become this new…version that she was still to come to terms with.

On that late Thursday evening, she had finally decided to swallow every negative feeling she had and just let him know what had been going on. After all, how long could she keep it secret anyway? It was bound to come out. He was bound to find out sooner rather than later. She shivered lightly when she felt the crisp air brush against her skin. This was the one day the weatherman had been wrong about his prediction. It was supposed to be a significantly warm day, and for that reason, she had on a light fabric jacket over a vest. The jacket was more of a fashionable thing more than warmth really, but she was beginning to wish she had gone for a jersey instead. Even in the car she was waiting in, she was not really feeling warm and she kept on wondering what was taking him that long. She had been waiting for a while, a long while really. It was now going to half an hour and she was just too far to determine if he was almost done with his friends or not. But even though it had been a long time, she had still not had enough time to figure out how she was going to let him know about the secret she had been keeping.

She looked up for the millionth time, but this time, she saw him running towards the car, fast. She felt her heart suddenly begin to race. He almost fell over as he slid over the hood of the car before he got in. She would have found that silly move cool if she was not so freaked out. She was calling him, asking for an explanation, but he wouldn’t give it to her. Instead, all he was doing was racing down the streets, maneuvering the corners as if their lives depended on it and until a few seconds later, Angela found out that their lives did actually depend on his driving. She screamed when she felt something hit them, making him swerve. She screamed and held on for dear life as he took a sharp turn getting them out of the way of the car on their tail.

Angela was panting. She could see the other car racing down the parallel street in a bid to catch up to them. She did not know whether the bullets were meant to slow them down or just stop them. Whatever it was, she was scared. She put a hand on her tummy as she cursed the day silently wishing she had told him about the baby before this whole mess. At that moment, she was just sure she was not going to get out of that car alive and that no one would ever know that there was a child involved in that crime.

“Damn it, Angela! You should have said something. There is no way he would have allowed a baby….his baby, to be in this kind of danger,” she thought.

But it was too late for regret. It was too late for ‘what ifs.’ All she could do was close her eyes and pray for her soul…
