Chapter 7

In the time since the final confrontation with Lara, Alan and Shanice had roamed around the Pacific Ocean, visiting dozens of hidden caves and generally enjoying their life as shifters and their relationship. They had found a cave that was underneath a small island and decided to live on the island for a few weeks, but eventually they both wanted to return to the shores of California for several reasons.

“Alan, I don’t want to try to fight her or anything, but I’m not going to avoid California forever just because she’s there you know? Plus, I’d like to call my parents and visit Tina.”

“I understand, I will go with you of course, but let’s try to stay out of any involvement with Lara. I don’t know what she’s planning and I don’t want to.”

They soon left the island and made their way from the warm waters near the equator to the ones off the West coast, arriving one night and hiding their signals in tandem to mask themselves completely. Almost immediately, they sensed a strange energy signal coming from one of the caves that they had visited in the past and despite Alan’s repeated warnings, Shanice headed toward it, with Alan staying a mile behind her to not arouse suspicion.

“Shanice, whoever is near the cave, just leave please. There could be more signals inside it, but we wouldn’t know without going inside, and then we would be found for sure.” Alan thought to her, glad they could now communicate over distances up to five miles.

“It’ll be fine, I’ll act like a normal shark, and if anyone tries to talk to me I won’t answer.”

Alan swam to catch up with Shanice and as they neared the cave, they saw a single hammerhead shark swimming in circles near the entrance.

“What is it doing? Is it looking for the entrance to the cave Alan?” Shanice asked, wanting to get closer or call out to the hammerhead.

“I’m not sure, but it seems to be acting strangely…it might be a shifter from the hammerhead clan. I will speak with it and allow you to listen, please don’t let it know you are able to do so.”

Alan swam ahead of Shanice and circled while he reached out to the shark, but got nothing from it save the emotions of hunger and agitation.

“This is just a normal shark; I believe it senses the cave, perhaps it saw something go inside of the tunnel and tried to follow,” Alan said. As he spoke however, a large tiger shark swam out of the cave and attacked the hammerhead, driving it away as Alan and Shanice felt the unmistakable energy of a shifter coming from it. The tiger shark swam back toward the cave entrance, then stopped as two great white sharks exited the cave, one obviously Lara, her belly clearly swollen. Alan and Shanice listened with surprise as the three sharks spoke mentally, not focusing their thoughts to one another, but openly thinking them, the mental equivalent of yelling a conversation.

“Guard, what was that hammerhead doing here?” Lara asked.

“I believe it was attracted by the blood from inside the cave Mistress. I chased it away; it was a simple shark for certain.”

“We’ll have to move to a new cave soon, this one is getting cramped for me. Begin preparations to move to another cave Gordon, I can feel these horrid pups fighting within me already.”

“As you wish Mistress, I will do,” said Gordon before flicking his tail, turning and swimming back into the cave past Lara.

Alan and Shanice watched as the guard was sent out on a mission to patrol on land and followed him at a distance until he reached the shore where their suspicions were confirmed as the tiger shark shifted into a human male and walked out of the water. The two swam away from the shore until they were miles from it and then tried to make sense of what they had seen.

“So Lara actually is trying to create an army of shifters it seems,” Alan said.

“It also looks like she’s pregnant,” Shanice said numbly.

“Alan, we can’t just let her do this, but what can we possibly do against her now?”

“I would say there is not much we can do to her as of now, but it’s okay, we can get some help; we just have to meet with the Clan… and my parents. Will you come along with me Shanice? I think you should, since you are my mate.”

Shanice agreed to go with Alan and together they set out for the clan of the shark shifters, not wanting to be caught up in Lara’s plots, but feeling as if it was becoming inevitable.

The end.
