Several miles away, Alan finally felt Jacob cease moving and hurriedly carried him to the shore, pushing his bulky body up toward the sands as he waited for the supposed transformation to a human to begin. As he watched, he saw nothing but the life signature of Jacob fading away as the shark’s eyes clouded over.
“Jacob? Why aren’t you transforming?” Alan asked, getting no answer. As he stood and thought, he recalled Shanice and the sharks at the carcass, then hurried back toward it, searching for Shanice as he swam at his top speed. He arrived at the carcass within minutes and saw that all the sharks that had been congregated around had dispersed, which was strange in and of itself, but when he saw Shanice, still in shark form, twitching as she listed in the surf, he felt himself grow enraged and swam to her, shifting to his human form as he did. He tried to speak to her mentally, but felt no reply. He ran his hands over her rough sharkskin, trying to find wounds but found none. As he began to panic, he heard a car behind him and turned to see Lara getting out and walking toward him.
“Hello Alan, I’m afraid the girl was attacked when there was a feeding frenzy. She fought back well, but I guess the damage was too much for her. I guess in the end she was weak, but that just shows that you do not need someone like her. Join me and let us begin the culling of humans, you should be-”
“Lara, I’m certain you had something to do with this, but it’s not even important. I am not ever going to be with you because Shanice is my mate and I care for her, you’re horrible and don’t care about anything but yourself. Leave me alone.”
Lara began to grow angry, feeling the emotion grow from the rejection. “You are being a fool Alan, I don’t care if you don’t want to, you will join me. Don’t be weak like Jacob was; understand that it’s natural for the weak to be killed by the strong. She’s dying and there’s nothing you can do.”
Alan began focusing all of his energy as he put his hands on Shanices’ head, the rough skin barely giving off any signs of life as her pupils stared blankly. “I’m going to heal her, I won’t ever join you, and I would rather die than be your mate Lara.”
“You’re being a fool, it would take all of your energy to heal her. You could lose your ability to shift and be stuck,” she said with surprise, her predator’s mind not comprehending the concept of selflessness.
The shark part of Alan was having trouble understanding his motives as well and spoke to him as he felt his energy draining into Shanice.
“What are you doing? We cannot give our energy away, it will make us weak, stop doing this. ”
“I care about Shanice; I will heal her no matter what,” Alan said, feeling his shark mind use all of the energy that allowed him to enter a frenzied state to heal Shanice. Alan felt an empty feeling for a moment as his body lost the ability to become frenzied, but as he saw Shanice shifting back to her human form, he felt true joy for the first time as her eyes fluttered open.
Lara felt herself burning with rage as she watched Alan help Shanice to her feet and the two stared at her indifferently. “I should have killed her instead of just wounding her it seems. I have never failed before though, and I will not here. I will kill your mate just as I killed Jacob, then I will just take total control of you…actually, I think this will be even better: Shanice, I challenge you to one on one combat.”
Shanice stared at the shifter that had just tried to kill her and then laughed, surprising both Lara and Alan.
“Shanice, why are you laughing? It will be difficult for you to defeat her as you are and I won’t be able to help you in the combat,” Alan said.
“I’m not doing that, it’s hilarious she would even ask. Lara, you just ambushed and then tried to kill me, lost, then had your stupid guards shoot me with those darts, all to try and get rid of me, and now you think I’m going to fight you fair and square? I totally refuse.”

“Alan, do you hear her? She is defying the law of our kind; this is what happens when you give humans anything! I have to kill her now, since she’s doing the same thing Jacob did and defying our ways,” Lara said with obvious happiness at the turn of events.
“I won’t listen to your laws, they don’t apply to me and they don’t have to apply to Alan. I’m going to go my own way and if you bother me again, I’ll kill you,” Shanice said simply.
“I’ve already taken control of the facility and will control this entire city soon; you think you can kill me? You’re a foolish child, and Alan, if you stay with her then that makes you a weak fool as well,” Lara spat.
“I don’t care what you say, and I’m not staying in this area anymore. Jacob is dead, my mission is completed, so I am going to explore, and what Shanice said sounds good to me. If you want to try to cull humans, then I cannot stop you, but you’ll probably fail because you don’t understand them. If you ever try to hurt Shanice again I’ll fight you along with her, though it seems like she has already beaten you once, so she probably won’t need the help,” Alan said as he and Shanice began walking toward the sea. Both of them shifted and began swimming side by side, this time heading out into the open ocean to roam to their hearts content. Lara headed back to the facility and immediately put the first part of her plan into action, calling a meeting of all of her guards as well as Manfree.
“Things didn’t go as planned, and both targets escaped. We have no way to track them for now, but they’ll be back eventually. In the meantime, I am going to begin increasing my security detail here so that we can begin our integration and take over, but all of you full blood humans are quite useless to me right now, but that will change over the next few weeks. When they return, they will find things quite different than they are right now.”
