Chapter 5

A Week Later

Shanice and Alan had been roaming  all across the ocean near California, finding caves and sleeping there, diving deep to help Shanice get over her fear of deep water that had low light and making sure that Manfree wasn’t anywhere near them. One evening after successfully hunting seals, they decided to roam on land for a while and walked down the streets late into the night, saying nothing, even mentally and just enjoying the journey. As they headed past an old building, a voice called out.

“Hey hey hey, where you goin babygirl? Why don’cha come ova here and talk wit me for a minute?”

“Shanice, who is that man? Do you know him?”

“No, it’s just some criminal or thug, let’s keep walking.” As they did so, the voice came again, this time followed by two more.

“Oh sh*t dawg, that bi*ch just dissed you! You gonna take that sh*t dawg?”

“Aw hell naw, I was tryna be nice but dis bi*ch had to diss me, that’s gonna cost her and that lil fruity lookin boy she wit.”

“Come on then dawg, lets get it.”

The three men came out of the alley and caught up with them,  as they did Shanice and Alan were deciding what to do by speaking mentally.

“They are disturbing us, I think we should kill them, they are bothersome and we didn’t provoke them at all.”

“Well, we can’t just start killing people though Alan, then the police will be searching for us, and that will worse than Manfree. Let’s just scare them away.”

“How? What frightens humans?”

“Start shifting your head into shark form and tell them that you’re going to eat them, but tell them in their minds. I’ll do the same.”

“What should I say? I don’t know what will frighten them.”

“Just tell them you’re going to eat them, but say it into their minds, that should do the trick.”

Alan began shifting and spoke mentally to each of the men at once, altering his voice to make it sound deeper.

“You humans have insulted me, I am going to tear you to pieces and eat you.”

Shanice began shifting as well and both of them walked toward the three derelicts that went wide eyed with terror as they saw the teeth that were filling both Shanice and Alan’s mouths. The men stumbled over each other in their haste to escape and ran screaming into the street as Shanice went back to normal and began laughing until she was crying, something Alan had never seen before and didn’t understand.

“Shanice? Are you okay? ”

“Yes, I’m fine, that was just so strange and surreal.  I want to go back toward the beach though, I like it better when I can see the ocean rather than all these pointlessly bright lights.”

They moved quickly, keeping themselves negatively charged to avoid anyone bothering them. Soon they reached the beach and shifted eagerly, Shanice diving deep and feeling amazed that she could still ‘see’ everything around her through her enhanced shark senses.

“I don’t think this will ever stop being amazing to me Alan, it’s like having a GPS in my brain! I can see all the caves we’ve been to, where there are fish, even where the water gets too deep for me to tell what’s in it. Have you ever been deep into the ocean before?”

“Yes, it’s a very strange feeling though; not fear, but something approaching it. We can go if you’d like, keeping ourselves negatively charged isn’t a good idea though.”

Shanice put on a burst of speed and Alan found himself hurrying to keep up with her as the descended one, then two miles into the ocean depths. Shanice began to slow as she heard incredible sounds, otherworldly noises that seemed like songs, clicks, squeaks, and tones similar to thunder that had to be made by something impossibly large.

“This…I think I know what small fish feel like now…What’s this tingling I feel Alan?”

“I think something is trying to speak with you.”

“I don’t want to, let’s get out of here, this is too strange.”

Suddenly Shanice felt and heard a powerful voice within her mind; so loud it blocked out her own thoughts.

“Little fishes, why have you come here? These waters are not yours. We see you and your mate in our depths, what is it you want with our space? Do you challenge us?”

Shanice tried to speak to Alan, but he was in a similar state to her, struggling to not be overwhelmed by the voice that spoke to him as well.

“You are not a fish…you are one of the little two legs that call themselves Lords of the sea. That is different, your kind bring trouble wherever they go. Leave, or we will tear your tail off and let you sink until the waters grow frigid and turn you to ice. These waters our where we play and hunt, return to yours or face our wrath. We will now charge you with the desire to flee. Don’t return. ”

Shanice felt her body moving on its own, pointing itself upward and powering toward the surface as fast as it could without her input. She was comforted somewhat by Alan being close to her. They reached the warmer waters close to the surface and slowly their bodies began to respond to their commands again. They swam to a new cave and as they made their way through the tunnel leading to the inside of it they spoke about what had just happened.

“Alan that was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me…what was it that was speaking to us? I never saw anything anywhere near us, but it was like it was looking right at me when it spoke…Was it some sort of whale?”

“Maybe, they are often down at that depth and they can see and speak for very long distances…I don’t like them, they think they are so much better than sharks, but massive sharks live deeper in the ocean too, I got to meet one a long time ago. Besides that, the most deadly being to ever inhabit the seas was an ancestor of sharks today, in the same family as us. It could kill and eat absolutely anything, even the largest of the land beasts stayed out of the waters where it hunted.”
