“She’s taken a heavy amount of damage, more than she’s ever felt I’d imagine. She can heal from it, but it will take time. We should leave here for now, I don’t care about killing Jacob anymore, let’s leave this entire country, there’s nothing holding us here.”
Back at the taxi, Jacob was growing tired of waiting for Lara to come back, so he got out and headed toward the shore. As he got closer, he saw and then smelt the blood from the fight that had occurred between Alan and Shanice. He walked calmly to where Lara’s body lay and felt a faint pulse in her.
“Lara it’s me, Jacob. What happened to you?”
“Jacob? They out planned me. The both of them attacked me and now I’m an easy target for Manfree.”
“That is true. He will be here shortly. I am sorry you failed to get what you wanted.”
“What is sorry’?” Lara asked as her shark body was slowly shifting back to human.
“It’s when you regret something that you did. You wish you hadn’t done it. It’s hard to explain.”
Lara had shifted her torso into that of her human form, but the tail was still recovering and her body was slowly washed back and forth by the waves as Jacob stared at her and thought.
“Jacob, just give me some of your power, you won’t ever need it since you’re not going to be a shark, help me to heal before Manfree gets here.”
“I never thought I would see you asking for help for anything, yet here you are. You haven’t been too great to me, but it hasn’t been horrible either, so I guess I’ll help you this time.”
Jacob knelt in front of Lara and placed his palm against her shoulder, focusing on healing her. As he did so, his mind briefly touched Lara’s and saw her rage; it was so powerful that it seemed to be the only emotion she had left. As his own life energy flowed into her, he became oblivious to the world around him; he felt his own soul briefly connect with Lara’s as he poured more of his own energy out into her and watched as her wounds slowly began to heal. Behind them, Manfree pulled up next to the parked taxi and had the guards get out. He stood in between them and looked at the driver.
“Excuse me, sir, have you seen any strange acting individuals here?”
“Damn right I have, those hellish things have to be some sort of devil! What are you here for? To save me?”
Manfree walked past the man without saying a word and took the binoculars from one of the guards. He looked out at the shore and saw Jacob and Lara, growing ecstatic when he noticed she was hurt.
“Now! The girl who controlled you all is hurt! Go and tranq them, hit them both!”
The four guards walked abreast of each other and advanced toward to the shore with their weapons drawn and each fired one of their darts into Jacob and Lara. Jacob stood up abruptly and his head jerked around, realizing the threat and preparing to fight them and at least kill some before they caught him. He lunged forward and began shifting his head, but the guards quickly retreated to the car and watched as Jacob stumbled forward a few more steps then fell, unconscious. Manfree was ecstatic and had the two shifters put into the trunk. He then walked to the shore and looked around, hoping to see Alan and Shanice, but couldn’t see them anywhere, even with binoculars on.
“It doesn’t matter, we’ve got the girl, this girl has been evading us for years and we finally have her. Take her back to the facility, I’m going to make her talk….I think she’ll be making many other noises as well. ”
“What about the taxi driver Mr. Manfree?” One of the guards asked.
Manfree sighed and went back to the taxi then knocked on the window, waking the terrified driver up.
“You again? Th’ hell ya want, you didn’t say anything to me last time and ya think I’m gonna speak to ya now? ”
Manfree shook his head and walked away from the driver who was still shouting at him until he was out of sight. He took out a small tablet style device and entered several passwords before speaking.
“Detonate tracking unit number 9 in fifteen seconds.”

As Manfree walked to the car the tracking unit that had been planted under the taxi detonated, blasting the vehicle into the air, and sending debris flying for hundreds of yards. Manfree went up to the guard who had asked about the taxi driver and smiled.
“There, now you don’t have to worry about it. Let’s get going, I want to start my experiments as soon as possible…I should have kept the woman in the seat with me now that I think of it, but no matter, there will be time aplenty once we reach the facility.”
In the trunk, Lara had regained consciousness and looked around before searching for energy signals; this time however, she couldn’t search at all and felt a sharp pain lance through her when she attempted to. Jacob woke up a few minutes later and they spoke to one another mentally.
“Jacob, I’ve failed and lost Alan, all due to that female of his. I have to kill her and then if he still won’t mate with me then I’ll force him to. I need strong children for what I have planned and he is one of the few I would have sire them. I believe we have been poisoned in some way, but they don’t seem to know about our healing abilities. I can already feel the poison losing its potency inside of me and they didn’t even restrain us. How are you?”
“I wasn’t injured, though the shock was unpleasant. The toxin is stronger in my system since I’ve suppressed my healing, but I should be fine soon. What will you do? Are we going to attack or let them capture us?”
