Jacob and Lara went back into the elevator and rode it to the third floor. Lara was so charged with excitement she didn’t even feel bothered by the ride and all but ran to the last door and then knocked on it as Jacob had, though far harder. Jacob stood a few feet away from her and watched, wondering if the sounds from the room drowned them out as Lara grew angry at being ignored, then knocked again. When she was ignored, Jacob had to pull her back so that she wouldn’t slam on the door and alert others in their rooms to what was going on.

“Lara, stop it. You have to calm down.”

“He’s right there. I can get to him, but he won’t open the stupid door, I have to make him open the door. Let me go.”

“You’re losing your head and reverting to instinct, you can’t shift here for one, and for two that door isn’t going to open unless they want to open it, so we have to figure out a different way to-”

As Jacob was talking, two security guards exited the elevator at the far end of the corridor.

Inside the room, Alan and Shanice had stopped having s*x when they heard the knock at the door. At first, they thought it was room service, but Shanice quickly went to the door and looked out, then saw Lara and Jacob.

“Alan, there are two people outside, I can’t feel any shifter energy from them, but they seem strange, look out of the peephole and see if you recognize them.”

Alan did so and then stepped back.

“Yes, it’s Vesas and Dervhal, they’ve tracked us somehow.”

Shanice began to panic and looked around for something to use as a weapon, but Alan stopped her.

“Stay calm, if they wanted to fight, then they wouldn’t have hidden their signals, I think they want to talk.  I’m going to let them in.”

As he said that, there was another knock at the door. Shanice shook her head defiantly.

“No! If you let them in, they could just kill us! We can’t expect them to just want to talk; if that’s the case they wouldn’t have hidden in the first place!”

Outside in the hallway, the two security guards walked toward Jacob and Lara.

“You two, stay where you are, you aren’t authorized to be here.”

“Ah, finally, now we can get in,” Lara said as she walked toward the two burly men who reached for their tasers, but were stopped as Lara used her control ability on them both.

“You two open the door at the far end of the hallway, now.”

Lara stood impatiently as the two men tried to open the door, but found it locked, and then turned to her.

“Break it down then, just do it, now!” She said, stepping back as they started kicking at the doorknob. Soon it fell off and the door swung inward, bringing Lara and Jacob face to face with Alan and Shanice.

“Well Theta, how good it is to see you after so long! Or do you go by a human name now?”

“Yes, I do, it’s Alan. Are you still Versas?”

“Indeed, but my human name is Lara. I see you’ve taken a new mate as well, can she even shift yet? You know how frail humans are.”

“She can shift, her name is Shanice, and we’re very happy. What are you here for and why is Dervhal with you?”

As Alan asked the question, he lunged at Jacob but was stopped by Lara, who got in between them.

“This isn’t the place; I just want to talk to you alone.”

“No. I’m going to; I don’t care what you say or who you are.” Shanice said.

“Fine, this doesn’t really concern you humans, but if you must be present, then we may as well speak here.”

Lara and Jacob walked into the room and shut the broken door as best as they could, leaving the security guards outside.

“You two may not like me because I claimed Alan as my mate long ago, but right now there is something even more important, Manfree is going to try to capture one or all of us, so we will need to work together to escape from him.” Lara said.

“Me and Alan have been doing fine on our own; we don’t need your help. Plus aren’t you supposed to be really powerful or whatever? You could stop them on your own.”

Lara did her best to suppress her anger as she spoke. “If you don’t believe me then join me in searching for Manfrees signal, with the four of us, we will be able to search very far so we will be able to tell if he’s moving toward us.”

Alan and Shanice both did so, focusing on the unique energy of Gordon Manfree and seeing that it was indeed moving toward their position.

“Now, since he’s tracking our energies somehow, we’ll need to work together to escape him for a while, at least until we can all part ways. I can show you two how to hide your energies so that he won’t be able to track you, I know you may not like me, but the best way for us all to survive right now is to work together. Will you come with me and Jacob?”

Alan and Shanice looked at each other, clearly debating it by thinking to one another. Soon Alan nodded and the four of them left the room together, walking uneasily down the corridor.

As they walked, Jacob spoke to Lara mentally.

“Why did you tell them that Manfree is tracking our energies? He’s tracking the taxi.”

“I know that, but they need to think he’s tracking our energies. Just trust me and follow along Jacob.”

“I see you’ve learned how to lie yourself now.”

As they spoke to one another, Shanice and Alan were also doing the same.

“Alan, I know she’s going to try something sooner or later, I want to be ready when she does.”

“She’s been trying to speak to me mentally ever since they were in the hotel, but I wasn’t responding. I will talk to her now, but allow you to hear without her knowing, and then you will know what she plans to do. She seems to be very angry at you for some reason.”

“Okay, that will work. Go along with whatever she says and I’ll pretend not to know.”

Alan finally began speaking to Lara, who had tried repeatedly to converse with him mentally.
