Phoebe knew that she was attracted to girls. It had always been this way for her and she was not ashamed of it at all. However, she had never really found a girl that she was interested in doing anything with. S*x was an incredibly intimate affair, and she did not want to just jump into the sack with anybody. She wanted the person that she eventually had s*x with to be good, and to not break her heart. Her first boyfriend had made her extremely hesitant about having s*x with anyone and as a result Phoebe never had s*x with a girl because she was afraid of what the outcome might be.

However, with Ruth, Phoebe found herself immediately comfortable. They were very open about their attraction to each other from the get go and as a result had s*x the very first night they were together. It had been an incredible experience, one of the most intense s*xual encounters of Phoebe’s life.

They had gotten together immediately afterwards. It had been the logical thing to do. After all, when there are two people who are so attracted to each other and they are so utterly compatible, the logical thing to do is get together, so this was what they did. They enjoyed being with each other a lot, and after few months they decided that it was time to get serious about their relationship.

They wanted to be together for the long run, and so they started to talk about marriage. This was where things started to go sour for them. Phoebe did not want kids. Ruth wanted lots of them. They decided to work on this problem and find a middle ground but this did not happen, and after three years of being together Phoebe and Ruth decided to end things with each other.

It had been a depressing break up, but a year after, Phoebe graduated and had started counseling. However, it proved to Phoebe that love just wasn’t for her.

“It’s been two years since Ruth, Stephanie,” said Phoebe. “I have not felt the need to love anyone and I don’t think I’m going to be feeling such a need any time soon.”

“You don’t have to feel the need,” said Stephanie. “I’m not saying that you should go out and get married. Just go out and have fun. Find somebody. Have s*x. After Ruth you made your career your everything. Before her you had been dedicated but not to the point of obsession. Now, all you think about is your career, probably because you think that nothing else in your life is going to give you satisfaction. Maybe you think that you are never going to find love so why worry about it at all, right? Well, that’s not how it works. I’m sorry to say but it’s just not. You have to put yourself out there. Love is important. It’s important to have someone in your life. If nothing else, it’s important to at least be open to the idea of love, because if you aren’t open to the very idea, how are you ever going to be happy?”

“Okay,” said Phoebe. “I guess you’re right. I mean, you have a point at the very least. After Ruth I stopped caring about love. I just didn’t want to be the kind of person that waited around for someone to come around and love them and make them feel good. I didn’t want to have my heart broken again, I guess. I wanted to be the one to fix my life, the one that made myself happy. I wanted to be completely self reliant but that’s just not how life works.”

“It’s good that you realize that,” said Stephanie, smiling and hugging Phoebe tight. “Why don’t we go out tonight? We can have a few drinks and be super irresponsible. I don’t think you know how important it is to just let your hair down. What do you say? It’s Friday night after all, you don’t need to go to work tomorrow, and neither do I!”

“Alright,” said Phoebe, returning her friend’s lovely smile and loving her more and more with each passing second. “Let’s go out and get drunk!”

“And if we see some cute guys, what do you say, we bring a couple of them over?” said Stephanie with a wink.

“Deal,” said Phoebe with a laugh and she got dressed. She looked absolutely stunning in her jeans and top, her braids hanging behind her, glistening, and her chocolate dark skin glowing. She was a vision, to be sure. She had a very African look about her, with her full lips, her high cheekbones and her flared nostrils. She had been called beautiful a lot. She wasn’t used to hearing it, but she knew that it was true.

They went to a bar and found some guys. Phoebe was not all that attracted to them, however. She saw a guy sitting at the bar with his head down so she decided to go over and talk to him. She felt like he was sad and he might need someone to talk to.

“Hey,” said Phoebe with a smile. “Has life got you down?”

“Very much so,” said the guy without looking up from his drink. He looked positively miserable. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I’m going to be very much fun to talk to.”

Phoebe felt really bad for the guy. He looked like he had been through hell. She decided that she wouldn’t abandon him simply because he was sad. If he needed someone to talk to, well Phoebe was a counselor after all. It would make her feel good to do this.

“Well, I’m not really looking for fun,” she said. “My name is Phoebe. What’s your name?”

The guy sighed and finally looked up from his glass. He was strikingly good looking, with stubble masking a strong jaw and sharp blue eyes.

“My name is Nate,” he said, “Nate Friedman.”
