It was the laugh of somebody that had been broken so many times that they laughed at the thought of falling. It was the laugh of someone that did not believe in what had just been spoken of anymore.
Simply put, Phoebe had never had a lot of luck with love. She was not the kind of person that chose partners well, and this had been the case ever since high school. She didn’t know why this was so. She was a very smart person, and in practically every other aspect of her life she was able to make wise and mature decisions. However, when it came to love it was as if Phoebe suddenly grew a pair of lenses that covered her eyes and made her feel like the flaws of the person that she was with did not matter.
Her first boyfriend had had s*x with her and left. He had been an asshole but Phoebe, the hopeless romantic that she was, thought that her love could change him. She had genuinely thought that he loved her, that he wanted to be with her. She had wanted to be with him too, because she felt as if she could change him and turn him into a good person then that, by extension, would make her a good person as well. This was not the case, of course. He had just been saying all of the things he had been saying to get into Phoebe’s pants. As a result, Phoebe lost her virginity and had her heart broken. She did not believe in love anymore, or so she thought.
Her next boyfriend turned out to be very controlling. He did not cheat on her, but the relationship turned emotionally abusive. Phoebe’s bad first experience turned out to pale in comparison with her next relationship. She had set the bar very low, you see. She had started to believe that if her man did not cheat on her then it would all be worth it. If he didn’t cheat on her then that meant that he was a very good man that deserved to be with her, even thought if the bar is set so low that “not cheating” was considered to be adequate criteria for being a good boyfriend then something was very wrong.
Indeed, her second boyfriend did not cheat on her, but he was extremely possessive. He made her stop talking to boys, made her feel like if she did something without telling him then she was betraying his trust. Phoebe found herself constantly afraid that she would do something to anger him. She found herself over thinking everything. She was forced to attain perfection in every single aspect of her life, or at least aspire to absolute perfection. Her second boyfriend always made her feel like she was not good enough no matter what she did.
This was, in a way, where her over thinking and relentless perfectionism had started. She felt like she would not be good enough and she would run away from the thing she was afraid of not being perfect at because it would make her feel the way her second boyfriend had made her feel.
At the end of the day, the second boyfriend was absolutely terrible for her. Although he never became physically abusive, emotional abuse was just as bad and it ended up having a significant impact on her life. She broke up with him eventually, but in the year and a half that she was with him she lost a lot of herself and, once again, felt like she would never love again.
This was not true. Phoebe was, if anything, a hopeless romantic after all. She had another relationship with a boy and he was extremely nice. In fact, he was the best boyfriend she ever ended up having in the twenty seven years that she had been alive so far. He was extremely nice to her, cared about her feelings and always made her feel like she was doing the right thing. He was extremely good in bed too, the best she had ever had, in fact, at least for a man. He was loving and tender and caring, and Phoebe was immensely happy with him for a time.
That time in her life had been one of the happiest she had ever experienced, but at the end of the day it simply wasn’t meant to last. In spite of how nice he was and how kind and loving, he was too irresponsible to be a good long term prospect for her. He did not want to work and was very lazy in practically every job he got. He was so lazy that he was never able to keep a job for more than six months, and that one time he had lasted over a year had prompted them to celebrate. These celebrations ended up being short lived, however. He was fired two weeks after completing his first year at his new job, something that made Phoebe decide to break up with him.
It was a practical decision, in the end. Phoebe just did not want to be stuck with someone who was not serious about their life. She missed him a lot, he had been her first true love after all. He had been the first person that she had felt like she could spend the rest of her life with. It was childish in the end, but the memory of him still warmed her, still made her feel like she was worthy of love.

If there was one thing that Phoebe was grateful for it was the fact that he had made her feel like she was worthy of love. She had never felt like that before. Her first boyfriend had made her feel like s*x was the only thing that she was good for, and after s*x she lost her value completely. Her second boyfriend made her feel like she couldn’t do anything right, and no matter what she did she would never be good enough for anyone. Her third boyfriend, Mark had been his name, had made her feel, for the first time in her life, that she was good enough, and she was still grateful for this.
He had a major impact on her life. It was after Mark that Phoebe decided to start studying psychology. She felt like she was good enough to do it, and she was all things considered. The fact that Mark had made her feel like she was worthy of love also allowed her to enjoy her fourth relationship, one that lasted the longest.
This fourth relationships was singular among all of her relationships in that it was the first, and only, relationship that Phoebe had with a girl. Her name had been Ruth and she had been amazing at first.
Phoebe had met Ruth in the library of her university. She had been studying philosophy and had been struggling with trying to understand an extremely important philosophical concept. Phoebe had always been extremely smart and as a result, she was able to deduce what the philosopher had been trying to say.
They had hit it off immediately. Ruth had started to talk to Phoebe about her life, and Phoebe told her how she had changed majors so many times. They were immediately attracted to each other.
