All of a sudden they heard a baby crying. Phoebe laughed and said, “Looks like little Stephanie is hungry again.”

“It’s your turn,” said Nate teasingly.

“It is not!” said Phoebe in a tone of mock annoyance. “It is most certainly your turn this time, because last time you were fast asleep and wouldn’t wake up no matter how much your baby cried!”

“I was exhausted from work!” said Nate. He sounded extremely guilty about that, so Phoebe kissed him on the forehead and said, “Don’t worry about it, baby, I know you were tired. You’ve been really busy these days, it’s completely understandable. It doesn’t make you a bad father, I hope you know that. Quite on the contrary, it makes you a good father because it shows that you take your job seriously, and I know that you are working so hard so that our daughter can have a good future.”

Nate kissed his lover on the lips and said, “But it’s still your turn. You’re the one who named it after your friend, you need to face the consequences now!”

He was joking, of course. Nate was very flippant about being a father, but only in speech. In reality he took his job very, very seriously. He was always the first one to get up whenever little Stephanie cried, and he was always the first to suggest some new technique if she continued to cry no matter what they did.

All in all, he was an absolutely excellent father and Phoebe was very happy that she had chosen him over Ruth. Last night had been an anomaly because he truly was having a very difficult time at work, so she did not blame him for not being able to get up when his daughter cried. It was the first time it had ever happened, after all, and he was so guilty about it that it made Phoebe realize just how seriously he took his mistakes.

Nate got up and went to look after their daughter, and Phoebe watched him leave with love in her eyes. She looked like someone that had never experienced even the slightest bit of unhappiness in her life, and that was rather odd because she had experienced a lot of stress up until this point in her life. However, over the past year that she had been with Nate, she had experienced so much happiness and joy that she could barely stand it. She needed to take some time, once in a while, to come to terms with the fact that she was so utterly happy, simply because she wasn’t used to being this happy all the time.

It had all worked out in the end. Phoebe had explained to Ruth that she couldn’t be with her. What they had once had had been lovely, it was true, but at the end of the day it was in the past and Phoebe had grown as a person. She had changed, and the person that she was now loved Nate and would be happier with him. Now that she knew that he loved her there was no doubt in her mind. She had decided the moment he had told her that he loved her, because the only thing that had been stopping her from choosing Nate had been the fear of spending her life with someone that didn’t love her.

Ruth had been very understanding which had impressed Phoebe. She had left, and Phoebe had moved in with Nate. Things had been tough in the beginning. His mother refused to speak to them, and didn’t even mention Phoebe by name because Nate had chosen to give the option to the board regarding who they wanted to appoint as their CEO.

He still earned good money but he had to make a lot of adjustments regarding his spending habits. He didn’t have much difficulty doing this, however. He was a very adaptable person. His job’s salary paled with the dividends he received from the shares that he had in his father’s company, but he decided to give these shares to his mother. He decided that if his mother had a controlling interest in the company she would be able to run it according to her own standards, and this would make her happy.

It did make her happy, very happy indeed, and it helped to patch things up between them. Now, they were on very good terms with his mother, Phoebe’s mother absolutely loved Nate.

Nate came back in with their beautiful baby girl in his arms. He was bouncing her as he walked and as he got to the bed he laid her down and kissed Phoebe.

“So,” he said, “I wanted to ask you something.”

“Ask away,” said Phoebe, propping her head up on her hand and smiling at Nate. “What do you want to ask me?”

“So the past year has been amazing,” said Nate. “It’s been… perfect. Our daughter is healthy and I have honestly never been happier in my life. I… I want to feel this happy for the rest of my life. I want you with me for the rest of my life. I want to be by your side, not just as the father of your child but as your husband.”

Phoebe raised her hands to her mouth. There were tears in her eyes. “Oh Nate,” she said. “Oh Nate…”

“So what I am asking you is,” said Nate, taking a box out of his pocket and opening it to reveal a beautiful diamond ring. “I guess what I’m asking you is… will you marry me?”

Phoebe was crying now, crying completely. She did not even want to hold back these tears because they were important to her. They were tears that her future husband had given her while asking for her hand in marriage.

“Yes!” she said, raising her arms in the air, “Yes, I will marry you, Nate.”

She kissed Nate and felt more happiness than she had ever felt in her life.

The wedding was a spectacular affair. They waited six months so that Stephanie was a little older, and in those six months they planned the wedding of their dreams.

Phoebe had never really known this about herself but she was a real sap when it came to weddings. She wanted all of the bells and whistles and Nate was more than happy to give her the wedding that she had never even dreamed of because she had never thought that she would actually like the idea of getting married!
