Chapter 10
Phoebe sat next to Nate in his car. She was nervous. She hadn’t been expecting him to offer to take her to the doctor for the sonogram. She hadn’t expected him to ask about the baby at all, least of all on such an important day in her pregnancy. She had been struggling with the fact that she was going to have to go and get her first sonogram done on her own, but at the same time she knew that Nate had told her, quite clearly, that he needed to focus on his company right now. She did not want him to have to do something that he didn’t want to do. She didn’t want him to think that she was forcing him into anything. Hence, she had kept her mouth shut and listened to him and done her job. She had told him everything that he needed to hear from her as a counselor and she had avoided the subject of the baby completely just as she had been doing for the past month.
She looked at him. Why had he asked today of all day’s? When he had asked her about the baby she had thought about the fact that her sonogram was in an hour and she had not been able to stop herself from telling him about it. She had regretted it immediately, because she had felt like she had made him a little uncomfortable. She wouldn’t have blamed him for changing the subject and asking her to talk about something else, and had been very surprised indeed when he had asked if he could come along.
Phoebe had very much wanted him to come along. She had very much wanted him to be there with her, because over the month that he had been coming to her for counseling she had started to realize she was still very attracted to this man. She was attracted to him not just physically but emotionally as well. That night had not just been about animal attraction. Neither of them had simply been messing around, neither of them had any kind of ulterior motive. Neither of them had been trying to get something out of it. They had both wanted some kind of support in some way, and they had both felt like they had found someone who could give them this kind of support.
She wondered if he was attracted to her. He had certainly been attracted to her that night, but she still wasn’t certain if his post s*x self felt the same way about her. She wasn’t sure if he would still want to be with her after all that had happened, and she was terrified that he would feel obligated in some way to be with her. She did not want him to feel obligated at all. She never wanted him to be around if he felt like it was something he had to do instead of something he wanted to do.
He wanted to go with her. She knew because he was the one that had asked about the baby in the first place, and she was positive that he didn’t feel forced to ask her about any of that either. He didn’t think that he was under any kind of obligation because she had never even mentioned the baby, she had never made him feel like he was doing the wrong thing by choosing his company over her, because she genuinely didn’t feel like he owed her anything. And yet, in spite of the fact that she never mentioned the baby, indeed she acted like the baby did not exist at all while he was with her during their counseling sessions. Hence, the fact that he had asked her about the baby had been completely his own prerogative. He had felt like asking about the baby, probably because he genuinely felt the need to know about how the baby was doing. This made Phoebe happy. She had given him an out, an out that any regular man would have taken, but Nate was constantly proving himself to be a lot better than the average person, he was proving himself to be exceptional time and time again.
They got to the hospital and entered the doctor’s office. The doctor was a nice man who was very friendly with the both of them. He left to get the equipment for the sonogram and Nate and Phoebe were left alone together.
“Hey,” said Nate, “would it be okay if I held your hand during the sonogram?”
Phoebe was taken aback. “Do you really want to?” she asked. “Do you really want to hold my hand, I mean, it wouldn’t seem weird to you?”
“It wouldn’t seem weird to me,” he said. “I just feel like I should do that, you know? To make you feel like you’re not alone, because you’re not. I’m here with you, I’m here for you, and I know that everything is going to be okay. You, however, are probably quite scared. I wouldn’t be surprised by that at all. I wouldn’t be surprised because this child is in your womb, you would fear for its safety because your body wouldn’t be allowing you not to.”
Phoebe was amazed that he knew this. He knew that she was scared about the result of the sonogram. She had not expected anybody to realize this because she had never indicated it to anyone. She had thought that it was quite silly of her to be scared. There was no reason to be, after all, at least on paper. The chance of anything bad happening was remote to say the least. Bad things didn’t happen to babies whose mothers didn’t smoke and stopped drinking immediately after they found out that they were pregnant.
“I would really like it if you held my hand,” she said. “And I really appreciate that you asked me first instead of assuming that it would be something that I wanted.”

Nate smiled at her. Phoebe smiled back.
“How did you know?” she asked. “That I was scared, I mean. I didn’t indicate it unconsciously, did I?”
“Not at all,” said Nate. “I just figured that you would be because you’re an expecting mother. It was logical.”
“Logical,” she said and she smiled. “I don’t think you realize just how empathetic you are. Not everyone would have realized this, you know. Not everyone would have been able to see that someone was scared in the way that you did. It’s really amazing that you know these things the way you do. It’s really amazing that I don’t have to tell you anything, that you just know.”
Nate stroked her forehead and then suddenly became self conscious and drew his hand away. Phoebe was a little disappointed that he did that. She had quite liked that he had done that. She had wanted him to keep doing it, but she realized that he felt that he was becoming too intimate. He probably felt like getting too intimate would be too much right now, while they were about to get the very first sonogram of their child. She didn’t mind. She wanted him to be completely comfortable, because right now he was going above and beyond what was expected of him. He was doing something that she wasn’t expecting him to do at all.
