She was ready five minutes before eight and she was thankful for that because Robert was right on time. He came up to her apartment to greet her dressed in one of the fanciest suits that Vanessa had ever seen.
It was a gorgeous suit, pure black and made of pure silk. He was wearing a black shirt underneath it as well as a black tie. It was a beautiful suit, and the all black combination had been a very bold choice indeed. She admired him for being able to pull it off, because a lot of people would not have been able to do so. She thought that he looked so good right now that she would have difficultly not tearing his clothes off of him on the way to the party.
She was surprised at this thought. It was the first overtly s*xual thought she had ever had about Robert. She was also surprised to realize that she did not regret thinking this way at all. On the contrary, she was turned on. She didn’t feel guilty because, at the end of the day, what was there, really, to feel guilty about? She was only feeling so guilty before because she had been writing about his dead wife, and having s*xual feelings towards him would have only complicated things for the both of them.
Now, however, their relationship had evolved so much. It was no longer just a relationship between employer and employee. It was a deeper sort of relationship, the kind of relationship that develops after two people know each other intimately. Not intimately in a physical way, perhaps, but intimately in the way that develops after you have had a true conversation with someone, the kind of conversation into which you pour your heart and soul. As a result of this intimacy, Vanessa did not feel awkward in any way about the fact that she was truly turned on by how good Robert looked right now, she was aroused and she wanted to display this arousal. This would have been too bold, however, so she settled for a compliment.
Robert beat her to it, saying, “You look absolutely stunning!”
“Thank you so much!” said Vanessa, smoothing down her dress. “You really like it?”
“Yes, you look beautiful, I have never seen you in a dress. You should wear them more often, they really suit you!”
“Thank you,” said Vanessa, blushing. She had not thought that Robert would like what she was wearing so much. She had thought that he would compliment her but only in passing, the kind of perfunctory compliment that is expected of a gentleman who is escorting a lady to a party.
“You look really handsome too,” said Vanessa. “You look really good in a suit, and I really like that you went all out with the black. It’s a really bold choice. I’ve never seen you in a suit either, oddly enough. I’ve seen you in suits on TV and in pictures I have seen in the newspaper but not in real life, isn’t that weird?”
“It is rather weird,” said Robert. “I’m glad we got to see each other in nice clothes. Shall we go?”
“Yes,” said Vanessa. “I would like that.”
She locked arms with him and he took her downstairs where his car was waiting. A chauffeur opened the door for them and they got in.
As they drove, they talked about a lot of things, but mostly they just enjoyed each other’s company in silence. Vanessa was rather surprised at how comfortable she felt in this silence. She had never really felt this comfortable being quiet with anybody before. She had always felt the need to say something to break the silence, something that would make her seem interesting or would make it seem like the person was not wasting their time by hanging out with her. She did not feel this need to justify her presence with Robert, however. He made her feel like her presence was wanted, as if she was doing something right just by sitting there. He never demanded anything of her, and this was what Vanessa loved more than anything else.

And so, they rode in silence, looking outside and at each other and talking about things intermittently. It was a lovely car ride, so much so that Vanessa was almost sad when it was over. She had wanted to enjoy this intimacy some more, she had wanted to enjoy silence with the man that she was falling for. She wanted to sit with him and look at things and comment on them and get his opinion. More than anything else, this was what she wanted from him.
She then realized that they were going to exit the car and go to a party and was immediately excited again. She had not gone out in a while because her social life had taken quite a hit after she had started working on the book. She had become rather obsessed with it, with the fact that she was writing it and that she had to write it well in order to move on into a career that she was looking forward to starting.
They exited the car and entered the party venue and were greeted by a chorus of hellos. Everyone here knew Robert, everyone came up to them and greeted them. Robert introduced Vanessa to each and every person there, and introduced everyone to Vanessa as well. He treated her like some kind of trophy, like someone that he was immensely proud to be seen with. Vanessa couldn’t believe that he felt this way about her. She couldn’t believe that he was parading her around as if she was something worth celebrating. She felt that way about him. She felt like she was getting more respect because she was next to him, she was proud to be seen next to someone like Robert Wexler, one of the richest men in the world.
She loved him in that moment. She realized that it was true. She was truly starting to love him, and as she saw him talking to people, as she took part in conversations with him she started to realize that everything about the night was perfect and this was just making her love Robert even more.
They started to drink, and Vanessa enjoyed it quite a bit. The only alcohol that she had been drinking over the past few months was the alcohol that she drank alone at home while working. An odd beer here and there, never any hard liquor. It was a fine way to drink when you’re on your own but she craved the feeling of drinking with people, of being around people while they drink and talking to them and listening to what they had to say after alcohol had loosened their tongues.
