Chapter 10

Vanessa was working on the rough draft of the second chapter. She was almost done and she was really excited to show it to Robert. She had a feeling that he would really like it because she had managed to capture an important part of his relationship with Marie. She had managed to capture what the two of them had truly been like, the good and the bad, at least that was what she felt as she reread what she had written so far.

She was excited because she felt that she would be able to finish this book in a manner that would make Robert very happy indeed. She wanted him to be happy. He really deserved it after all he had been through. He deserved to be able to think about the years that he had spent with his wife and not feel sad, to be able to read about it and remember it for what it truly had been instead of what he had perhaps wanted it to be in some way. She wanted him to realize that all relationships have their ups and downs, and if his relationship had them too it was only because he was just as human as everyone else.

All of a sudden, she got a call. It was Robert. Vanessa had not been expecting a call from him but she was glad he had called nonetheless. She never felt like he was imposing, and no matter what she was doing if Robert called she would always feel like talking to him rather than doing what she had been doing. It was a great feeling, to have someone in your life that you want to give priority too. It was something she had never felt before but she was really glad that she was feeling it now.

“Hello?” she said, answering the call.

“Hey,” said Robert, “I hope I didn’t disturb you.”

“Not at all,” said Vanessa. “I was just finishing up the draft of the second chapter of your book, I think you’ll really like it when I show you tomorrow.”

“I can’t wait to read it!” said Robert. “I’m sure you’ve done an absolutely fantastic job. Listen, are you free tonight?”

“Yes I am, why?” asked Vanessa.

“Well, there is this party,” said Robert. He hesitated. Vanessa could hear it over the phone. “Would you like to go with me? I was going to go with a friend but she is no longer able to go because she has some urgent business to attend to. I really don’t want to go alone and to be honest going with you would be a real pleasure. If you aren’t doing anything and want to come with me, what do you say we go together?”

“That sounds lovely!” said Vanessa. She was surprised that Robert had asked her. Even though they had gotten quite intimate of late, she still hadn’t been expecting that she would go to a public event with him. His friends would be there, she would be introduced as his date. It was an amazing thought to be at his arm, to be paraded around with him.

After his wife had died he had become one of the most eligible bachelors in the entire city. To be seen with him at a party would be a great experience because she would immediately fit in, nobody would think that she was part of a different crowd in any way because the person she was with would make her seem like she was part of the same crowd that was attending the party.

“Great!” said Robert, sounding delighted that she had said yes. “What do you say I pick you up at around eight? It’ll go on until quite late, I hope that’s okay.”

“Yes that’s fine,” said Vanessa. “I was planning to stay in, but this sounds like a lot more fun. I’ll see you at eight. What’s the dress code?”

“Just wear something simple and elegant,” said Robert. “A dress would be perfect. Any dress. Don’t worry about it. I’ll make sure that every single person there knows that they are to treat you with the utmost respect, alright?”

Vanessa laughed and said, “Thank you, that’s really sweet. I’ll be waiting.”

She cut the call and held the phone to her heart. This was something unexpected but she was so glad that it had happened. She had never expected Robert would want to go anywhere with her, that he would want her to be his date at such a public event. And he had sounded so uncertain. He had sounded almost as if he was afraid that she would say no to something that sounded so wonderful to her.

She went to her wardrobe and started looking for dresses that she might wear. She wanted to look good for Robert. It was the kind of event where dressing really mattered. She found a lot of dresses but nothing seemed to fit the occasion. She realized she was being a bit too picky but she wanted everyone there to think that she looked good and she was going to put a lot of effort into making sure that happened.

She eventually found the perfect dress. It was a beautiful dress that she had gotten a while ago but had never really worn. She hadn’t worn it because she had never really had any type of event that would allow her to blend in while wearing this dress. It was quite sad, really, that she had not been able to wear it because she had bought it so excitedly and with so much passion. She had wanted to wear it to some kind of fancy party just like the one Robert was taking her to today, so it was fitting that she was going to wear it at a party like that today.

She thought that she was going to look rather odd in the dress. After all, she was not really used to wearing dresses. However, she looked at herself in the mirror and realized that she looked very nice indeed. She looked so nice that she almost didn’t recognize herself. She had never really thought that she would be able to pull off this kind of look but it turned out that she was able to after all.

This made her very happy, because she would look good tonight with Robert. She wondered how he would look. It sounded like a very fancy party where everyone would be in suits. She was surprised to realize that she had never really seen Robert in a suit before. She had seen him in suits on TV, of course, and in pictures, but she had never seen him in anything other than comfortable clothing in person since she had always seen him in person at home.
