Chapter 6

It had been a month since Vanessa had started interviewing Robert and she had gotten a lot of information about their relationship. Vanessa was surprised at the intricate detail with which Robert remembered his relationship. She was amazed at just how much he remembered, and how he would be able to word it so well while telling her about it. She was starting to realize that Robert was, in fact, quite a good storyteller. The only problem was that he did not have the ability to voice himself properly in written form. She was starting to realize that a lot of what she wrote would be word for word what Robert told her, and this was making her job quite easy.

She had started to come to terms with how Robert felt about his wife. She was starting to realize just how important this was to him. She had understood from the very start that this was going to be very important to Robert indeed, but after he had cried in her arms, she had started to realize that this was not just a question of getting things out there, this was a question of survival where Robert was concerned.

She wanted him to get better, she desperately wanted him to be happy. She was starting to like him quite a bit. She had begun to realize that maybe a relationship with Robert would not be the best idea, but at the end of the day it would still be a nice thought for her. She began to realize that what she wanted from Robert might just sound nice, and it wouldn’t be very nice in practice. She was starting to realize that Robert was not the kind of person who let himself think about these things a lot either after his wife had died, so the very thought of being in a relationship with somebody would probably send him into a panic.

What she did not know because she was not going to ask him so bluntly anytime soon, was that Robert was feeling the same way about her as well. He was starting to realize that he was getting some serious feelings for Vanessa and it was scaring him but not as much as he would have realized. He was starting to feel like however things would go, it would not turn out well for him.

In many ways, his current mental state was very similar to Vanessa’s own. It was very similar because both of them realized that being together would not be right, that they were in a professional relationship at the moment and that the nature of their relationship would make it highly unethical for them to think about turning it into anything even slightly more intimate.

And so, these two people that obviously were starting to get insanely attracted to one another danced around the prospect of a true relationship. They did not know that such a thing was inevitable, or at least some moment of seemingly inappropriate intimacy was bound to occur.

Vanessa had started writing this week. She had just created a short draft of the first chapter, very rough, just something she had managed to piece together in her free time. She wanted Robert to get an idea of her writing style so that he would be able to understand what the final product would be like. The best way to do this would be to start early so that the book would not be delayed past its prospective date of completion.

She was starting to feel like finishing this book as quickly as possible would be a really good idea because it would allow her to move on. She was really attracted to Robert but there was no chance whatsoever of either of them being able to progress from the highly professional relationship that they currently had. She knew that she was headed for heartache. She had been there before, of course. She had felt the sting of unrequited feelings and she was not going to allow herself to feel it again. She was thirty years old now and her career was really taking off. She did not have the time nor the patience to handle heart break at this stage in her life.

Hence, she was really looking forward to finishing this book. She would have a fair bit of money saved up from the rather hefty salary that she was getting during the writing of this book. Additionally, she would start getting royalties a few months after the book was completed because it would be released by then. She was sure that the royalties would increase her personal wealth quite a bit. She was sure of this because Marie Wexler had been a very important American figure, and everybody had wanted to read about her after she had died. There had been a number of books that had been written about her but none of these books had been from any official sources. This was going to be the most official book out there because it was going to be based on information gained from her own husband. The book, when it was finally released, would sell like hotcakes.

Vanessa thought about what she would do with the money that she earned. This had a lot to do with her finishing the book as quickly as possible. She felt that it would help her understand if she was any good at writing novels. She had always liked the idea of it but had lacked the courage and drive to actually do it. Now that the book was being written, she had a feeling that she would get the hang of it, but in case she didn’t, she would at least have concrete evidence proving to her once and for all whether she had what it took to be a writer or not.

If the book sold really well, which it inevitably would, Vanessa would read the reviews. If they were good and they praised her writing, she would use the royalties to support herself while she wrote a proper novel, not one that she would ghostwrite but one that she would actually write on her own, based on her own plot. If the reviews were not so good she would simply use the money to travel. She wouldn’t be all that upset about it because at the very least she would be able to know either way whether she was a good writer or not.

At the end of the day, Vanessa was desperate for this book to be finished as soon as possible. She was going to his home today, she was going to show him the first draft, and if he liked it she would start to write properly and try to finish this book before the due date. She would get the same amount of money either way, this much was specified in the contract. She would have more free time if she did this as well.

She got to Robert’s home and he greeted her with the exact same warmth that he had been greeting her with all this time. She was starting to get used to it, starting to enjoy it. She wanted that warmth, wanted to feel it every day. She was starting to crave it and this scared her because she knew that this just wasn’t possible. She knew that it wasn’t possible for her to be able to enjoy this warmth every day because there was absolutely no way that they could be together.
