Chapter 5
Micah opened the door when he heard a knock, and let Rose inside. She looked confused and just a little worried, but as soon as she saw her daughter in tiger form lounging on a bed, she was quick to run over and greet her.
“I really can’t believe this is happening,” she told them. “First your brother ran off with a human, and now you decided upon someone other than a tiger, too. I just know your father is going to blame me for teaching you two to think for yourselves.”
“What did you just say?” Micah gasped. “You knew where your son was all along?”
“Oh no, I didn’t say that,” she defended herself. “I’ve only just learned the truth about David from the good doctor as well. She says that she’s intending to take the two of you to stay where they are. You’ll end up getting studied a bit, of course, but that won’t do you any lasting harm, any more than it did me.”
Yeah, if you don’t count the fact that your offspring don’t want to mate with tigers, Sylvie pointed out so that both of them heard. They both laughed at the observation.
“Other than that, then,” Rose had to agree. “But I don’t know how I’m going to explain all of this to your father. He’s likely to send me packing next.”
“Why don’t you just tell him the truth?” Micah wanted to know. “Don’t you think he would rather know?”
“Know that his daughter is mated to a lion?” Rose scoffed. “Are you insane, Micah? Of course he won’t want to know that!”
“You’d know better than I would,” Micah shrugged.
Well, as interesting as this whole conversation has been, said Sylvie with a yawn, I’m suddenly quite tired. I think I’m going to take a nap.
“All right, then,” said Rose with a smile. “I’ll come to see you in the morning. I’m going to see as much of you as I can before you’re gone.”
Great, talk to you later, then, she said, curling up onto her bed and laying down her head on her paws. Her two companions smiled indulgently in her direction.
“Talk to you later, Rose,” said Micah.
“None of that,” she said. “From now on you get to call me Mom.”
Micah grinned. “See you later, Mom.”

“Did the doctor say anything about making love during the pregnancy?” asked Micah as he ran his fingers through Sylvie’s fur later that night.
Like this? she asked dubiously. I’d rather not. I prefer to think of our coming together to be more of a human thing.
“I agree,” he smirked, and she smirked back because he was already in his human form, just as he usually was whenever they spent any time together.
So you think I should go against doctor’s orders and shift into my human form just so you can ravish me, sir? she asked with a decidedly huge grin.
“Oh, yeah, definitely,” he told her, his grin even broader. “She did use the words ‘as much as possible’, right? I mean, you can’t be a cat all the time. Sometimes the human in you just has to come out, don’t you think?”

It didn’t take her three seconds to shift, giggling all the way. The long red hair she had in human form got tangled in the pillow when she tried to roll over, but it was only a momentary pause as she pulled it free.
“You’re so damned beautiful,” Micah told her as her lips descended, so they wore a delicious smile as they found his.
“You’re not so bad yourself,” she mentioned. “I suppose we’ll probably make a very beautiful daughter, eh?”
“Undoubtedly so,” he grinned lazily as he watched her climb on top of him. “What are you doing up there?”

The following morning, just as she’d promised, Rose came to see her daughter and Micah. They spent the morning together watching the television that had been in the room. Because they were usually out in the savannah, or in Micah’s case the forest, watching the moving pictures on the screen was a relative novelty for them, so they were having lots of fun.
