Micah reacted to it by yanking her into his arms, kissing her soundly. All the while they kissed, he reached down and opened the latch, practically carrying Sylvie through the door. There was a little cot inside, freshly stuffed with soft, sweet-smelling grass. She knew he’d done it himself. It made her want him even more.

Grinning broadly, she threw herself down onto the little bed and crawled around, making it comfortable before turning to look up at Micah invitingly. He laughed at her.

“Kitten, you’re a bit overdressed for that sort of a bed, don’t you think?” he asked as he pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it aside.

After she had begun mating with Micah, he had told her that he doubted they’d ever have any children, that because of the differences between natural lions and tigers, such a birth never occurred in the wild, and among shifters such a thing was unheard of as well. However, about a month later—a blissful month of clandestine meetings by night and polite exchanges by day at the Community Center—Sylvie was beginning to suspect that he was wrong.

She felt—different. Like something monumental was going on inside of her. Something she wasn’t sure was a very good idea. She went to the vet by herself, not wishing to say anything to Micah until she was sure. She supposed if she was pregnant, they could always live together in their little hut, since it was likely the other tigers would force her right out of their village.

“You’re very right, Miss Paws, about your condition,” the veterinarian told her. “You’re carrying just one cub, but she seems a bit bigger than I’d expect for the time you say has passed. But, going by your reported time of activity, I’d say you’ve got roughly two months to plan for your baby’s arrival. You’ll begin to show very soon, and you should try to remain in tiger form as much as you can during that time. It helps make the birthing process easier if you do.”

“Doctor, there’s one more thing,” she said. “Will there be any kind of complications associated with birthing a liger cub?”

Her face fell for a moment as she took this in, and then she grimaced. “Do you have any idea what kind of trouble that’s going to cause?”

“Well, we both thought—well, we didn’t think we’d ever make a cub together,” she explained with a blush. “I’m as shocked about this as you are.”

“And the father?” she asked.

“I haven’t mentioned this to him,” she explained. “But I know he’ll be pleased. We’ve become very close over the time we’ve spent together. I can’t imagine him being anything else but pleased.”

“All right, I have to tell you this up front. What you’re saying to me now, it’s unprecedented. We’ll have to watch you carefully and monitor your cub. We may need to move you to the Community Center just to keep you—well, to make sure nothing bad happens to you.”

“You mean to keep me safe,” Sylvie nodded. “From the other shifters. I understand that. But I won’t come unless Micah can be here too.”

“Yes, of course,” she nodded. “I would never exclude your mate unless that was your wish.”

“Thanks,” she smirked.

“What for?”

“For calling him my mate,” she grinned. “I like the sound of that.”

“Well, then I suppose you’d better go and tell him what I said,” the doctor chuckled. “All of what I said. And you might want to bring your mother here to me, rather than tell her by yourself. I know she will understand this, but I don’t think the rest of the tigers will share her joy. I want you confined well before word of this reaches either of the shifter groups. We may even be forced to hide you and Micah somewhere off the preserve once word gets out about this.”
