Playing With Fire

“I don’t know what is going on with her. She…we have not really had the best working relationship ever since the first day I met her…I mean, it’s been fire and brimstone between us and then she shows up telling me about some theory…” His voice trailed off.

“A theory?” Randy echoed and Victor nodded. “What was that about?”

“Hell if I know. I was just trying to figure things out when she just came at me.”

“When you say came at you…” Randy started.

“She stripped down, looked at me condom in hand. and told me she wanted me,” Victor clarified.

“Damn,” was all Randy could say.

“I know.”

Victor pulled his backpack out of his locker and sighed loudly as he leaned against it.

“And…did you?” Randy asked and he nodded.

“I kind of felt like I was obliged to,” Victor said. “And let’s not forget the part that she is one hot…sexy woman. Annoying though…but still a sexy woman.”

“And then what?” Randy asked and Victor shrugged.

“What do you mean ‘and then what?’ There is nothing more to tell.” He hung his backpack on his shoulder. “She went AWOL. I haven’t heard from her in a while.”

“Why don’t you call her?” Randy asked and Victor shook his head.

“And say what exactly?” he asked. “I am not even sure what I am supposed to be telling myself about this situation.”

“You want to call her,” Randy said smiling. “I know you do.”

Victor exhaled loudly and shrugged.

“Even if I did, I wouldn’t know how to reach her.”

“Well, I know how you can reach her.”

Randy smiled and got up from the bench. She walked over to her locker and Victor waited as she got her phone from the locker.

“There,” she said just as Victor heard the message tone on his phone go off. “I just sent you her number.”

Victor shook his head

“I’m headed out to the showers now,” she said as she turned around and walked off, leaving Victor still standing there.

He reached for his phone and looked at it for a long time wondering whether he should use the number and call Macy or not. He was not used to being on this side of things. As Zachary Racine’s son, he was the man every guy loved to hate and every woman wanted to be with. He had never had a problem picking up women. There had always been a way to get in with the women. Not just any woman but the most beautiful women. The ones people thought of as unattainable. But after being cut off from the Racine family fortune, he was not very sure he would ever be able to lure any other woman again. Maybe it was because at the back of his mind he had always known that a good percentage of the women were just with him because of who he was and what he could do for them. The connections he could provide them with…but ever since people found out that he had been cut off, his friendly herd had thinned a little more than he would have hoped for. Maybe that was why he was so shocked when Macy came on to him at the captain’s office. It was not that he was not attracted to her. Got knows that she made him feel things that he hadn’t felt in a long time.

His heart was racing as he drove to his place. All the while he was wondering if he should make contact with Macy. It was a hard decision. Probably the hardest decision he had ever had to make. But when he finally pulled up in front of his building, he couldn’t go in. He couldn’t go into the house without talking to her first. He needed the closure.

He did not even know when he was doing it, but he was dialing Macy’s number. The next thing he knew, he was holding his phone to his ear listening to the phone ring on Macy’s end of the line.

“Hello?” he heard Macy’s unmistakable voice on the other side of the line.

“Macy? Macy Yardling?” he asked.

“Yes, speaking. Who’s this?” she asked.

“It’s Victor Racine from SFFD.”

There was a long silence before she spoke again.

“How did you get my number?” she asked.

“Randy Lucas gave me your number…I’m sorry. I didn’t want to…” His voice trailed off. He didn’t even know what he was supposed to say next. “I shouldn’t have called,” he finally admitted.

“No…it’s fine,” she said quickly, probably before he could hang up.

“How are you?” he asked not knowing what he was supposed to say next. He could almost picture her shrugging.

“I’m fine…took a few days off.”

“So that’s why I haven’t seen you lately.”

She laughed.

“Everyone is entitled to some time off, especially for someone who hasn’t taken time off in a few years,” she said and Victor forced out a laugh.

“A few years?” he asked as he leaned in her chair. “Are you some kind of workaholic or something?”

A smile played on his lips when he heard her laugh.

“Or something.”

“So…you came over to…I don’t know how to say this.” He could feel his cheeks flushing as he spoke. “That night when you came to see me at the captain’s office.”

There was a long silence from her side of the line before he began talking again.

“I’m a little confused about everything.”

“I know,” she said in a soft voice.

“Especially since you said that you were, what was that ‘testing a theory’ you said?” he asked unsure of what she was going to say. He had been trying to figure out what she meant since the last time he saw her. But he was never really sure of what she was all about or why she had chosen to come at him the way she did.

“That’s exactly what I was doing,” she said.

“And do you mind if I ask what the theory was?” he asked.

He heard her take a long deep breath.

“It’s complicated,” she said.
