Macy took another bite of her lasagna.
“And how is that supposed to happen?” she asked.
“I know your type. So all I have to do is get a man matching your preferred physical qualities,” he said as she watched him typing something on the screen.
“You are never going to find the asshole in question,” she said matter of factly as she took a sip of her wine.
Leo forced out a laugh.
“On the contrary. The San Francisco Fire Department did a calendar spread at the beginning of the year, something to do with raising money for some charity…the burn unit at San Francisco General or something of the sort.”
Macy nodded as she took another bite. She was not very sure where this conversation was going. And for some reason, she wanted to know.
“And given that I am a man engaged in the arts,” he went on as he typed frantically on the screen. “I can tell that they picked the best of the best.”
She shrugged.
“So?” she asked.
“So, my search grid just got a whole lot thinner. Twelve men thinner,” he said as he turned the iPad to Macy’s direction. And just like that, she knew that he was right. It was not going to be hard for him to point him out because right there on the screen, posing for the month of December, was the same man she had met earlier that day. Mr. December, Victor Racine looking dapper in all his perfectly chiseled glory.
“Shit,” she thought as her eyed the iPad. It was only a matter of time before Leo found out what happened.
“I know you know I’m right,” he said.
She looked up at him and shook her head.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Actually, I do. I know that you had drinks with Randy and Mr. December last week.”
She looked up and raised an eyebrow over the other. The truth was that Randy had invited her out for drinks with her and Victor. And while they were out there, she had noticed that he had a softer side to him. Something friendly even. And it was at the same placewhere she had found out that Randy did not have any feelings for Victor as she had suspected which was not really an issue but for some reason, she found herself wondering why. Could she have been jealous or something? But it didn’t make any sense. Randy’s interested in her seemed to be genuine and generally all about her volunteer work. According to her, she had noticed the patch on her backpack that sparked the conversation. It took a few drinks for Macy to realize that Randy did not have feelings for Victor. Heck. She didn’t have feelings for any man…but that was beside the point. The underlying factor was that she had gone out with Victor and actually had a conversation with him. But she had thought she would keep that to herself. There was no way of knowing how the whole situation was going to work especially since the only way she survived working with him was ignoring the fact that she had actually had a good time with him that evening. But once they were working together to put out a fire, all hell broke loose. They could never see eye to eye because all he saw when he looked at her was a woman trying to play hero and she knew that she was just as important as he was.
“It was just drinks,” she said.
“Then why didn’t you say anything about it?” Leo asked and she shrugged.
“There was nothing to tell,” she said dismissively. “Like I said, it was just drinks.”
“Oh honey, you and I know that it is never just drinks,” Leo said smiling.
