Speaking of trouble, who is this fine hunk of a man walking by? Sara looked up at the man and smiled. He returned it and walked on by. She checked her rear view mirror, watching him from behind and biting her lips. Now that was something she could really dig into. She turned her attention once more to the glass door and then checked her watch. It was now fifteen minutes after one; she must be making progress by now. She began tapping her nails on the steering wheel again, and beginning to feel the weight of boredom pressing down on her, she punched some buttons on the radio and found a station that was playing some rock and roll music. She bobbed her head and started singing, trying to distract herself.

Just then the glass door opened again and Jennifer bounced out, a smile covering her entire face. She opened the door and threw herself into the car. Sara didn’t get a chance to ask.

“I’ve been hired,” she squealed, throwing her hands around the neck of her friend.

“Finally,” Sara exclaimed. “Now we can get on with our lives,” she joked, receiving a punch from Jennifer for that. “So, what is it you are supposed to be doing?” she asked as she eased the car onto the street, making her return trip to Jennifer’s house.

“For now, I am going to be the Personal Assistant for Mr. Jacobs; he is the CEO here and he has wanted an assistant for the longest time now. I will run errands for him, for work and other personal reasons, copy this, and file that, whatever the boss needs. Right now I’d shine his shoes if he asked me to,” she laughed.

Sara joined in. “That bad huh?”

“Honey, any honest money I can get now I’d take because anything is better than sitting at home watching my funds dry up.”

“I can imagine. I am just hoping my business stays afloat long enough so I can make enough from it. I am thinking to expand. Maybe I will open another salon across town where the traffic is greater. What do you think?”

“As long as you can make it work, why not? Can’t have too much money or assets as far as I am concerned. I would like to be managing my own company some day, or even someone else’s for starters, but I will have to work my way up. “

“Hey you want to go and grab a bite to eat? I am starving,” Sara interjected.

“Same here. I haven’t had a hunger so fierce since…”

“Since you lost your last job,” Sara finished for her. Jennifer gave her a ‘whatever’ look.

“Where are we going?” she now asked.

“Where do you think?” she asked. “I bet you haven’t buried your face in one of Manny’s burgers in a long time,” she grinned.

“Manny’s? You really are trying to kill me,” Jennifer wailed.

“Live a little. Everyone knows Manny makes the best burgers this side of town, hands down.”

“I know that. I am just afraid I might develop an addiction again,” Jennifer laughed.

“Oh right,” replied Sara. “Well I will ensure you are removed civilly,” she laughed. Sara pulled up at the little burger joint already buzzing with repeat customers. Once you eat at Manny’s, you always eat at Manny’s. The two exited the vehicle and made their way inside the establishment. The smell of burgers, fries, onion rings and wedges almost drove Jennifer insane. She had stuck to her meagre diet for weeks, trying to conserve money, but boy did she miss this place.

“What are you having? My treat,” Sara was quick to add.

“Everything.” The two burst out laughing as Sara placed her orders and the two finally weaselled their way into a tiny booth in the corner that had just gotten available; the waitress hadn’t even cleaned the table as yet, but they would rather she come along after they were seated because the seats were disappearing far too quickly. In another moment she returned and the girls were able to begin devouring the greasy goodness.

“This must be heaven,” Jennifer said as she bit into hers and closed her eyes. She had a milk shake as well and in no time she had consumed both burger and drink.

“You weren’t joking about being hungry were you?” laughed Sara.

Jennifer slurped the remaining shake from the cup, ignoring her friend’s words. She looked around her now, taking in the sights and the sounds of the diner, taking note of the pedestrians outside. She breathed a sigh of relief; it was good to be employed, and now that she was, her mind slowly wandered back to Adrian and she wondered if she would ever see him again. If she wanted to.
