Chapter 8

Over the next week, the three candidates spoke to weres around the city in small-scale campaigns to become the next Head. Nathan had his ear to the ground, listening to rumors about who was the favored candidate. Because Maryann had Sarah’s help, who apparently had contacts all over the city, she seemed to be in the lead. He was happy about that; he felt that Maryann, although a bit sneaky, would make a good Head, a strong leader. And he felt that she would be able to get this Marissa crap under control.

On the day of the vote, he woke early next to Lucy. She was snuggled up against him, one arm over his waist. He could feel her bre*sts against his back and he hardened at the thought of their lovemaking the night before. He could hear her breathing deeply in her sleep, so even though he wanted to roll over her and kiss her, he didn’t. He didn’t want to wake her. He lay there a few more minutes, waiting for her to wake up or his alarm to go off, which ever happened first.

A few minutes later, she began to stir, squeezing him around the waist before rolling onto her back and stretching. He rolled over and put his hand on her stomach, admiring her beautifully dark skin as she yawned spectacularly. She finally opened her eyes and looked at him, a slow smile sneaking across her face.

“Good morning,” she whispered.

“Good morning, sweet lady,” he said back and kissed her gently on the lips.

She batted him away playfully. “Ew. I have morning breath. No kissing yet.”

He laughed at her. “Your morning breath is ambrosia to me, my love.”

“Ugh. You’re such a dork in the mornings,” she grumbled. She was not a morning person, he’d learned quickly. She rolled out of bed and padded to the bathroom.

He rolled over and watched her amply sexy ass as she walked away from him. He let out a wolf whistle and wiggled his eyebrows at her when she looked at him. He threw the covers back and called out to her, “Today is the vote. I bet your mom is freaking out.”

She was putting her hair up in preparation to climb into the shower when he joined her in the bathroom. “I doubt it. Mom doesn’t get freaked out about anything. She was one of the leaders back home as well, so this is just a bigger position for her.”

He was brushing his teeth. After spitting, her turned to her and said, “I think she has a good chance of winning.”

Lucy looked at him again. “You do?”

“I do, yes. Sarah has really been pulling for her, talking to everyone. And believe me, she knows everyone.”

Lucy tilted her head. She stuck her hand under the water in the shower to make sure it was warm enough. She stepped in and let the water run over her body. She grabbed her loofa and soaped up as she thought about what it would mean if her mother was the Head of the Guard. Either really awesome or really awful, she thought to herself with a grimace.

Since her mother had been nominated, Lucy had seen a new side of her, a stronger side, almost frightening in her strength. She wondered if her father knew about this side of her and if he liked it. Her mother’s exile had officially ended, and now she was set to be the most important were in the city. She was grateful she’d gotten the job as media liaison before this; she didn’t want people to think her mother had hired her just because she was her daughter.

The door opened and Nathan stepped into the shower behind her. She glanced back at him with a smile. “I’m almost done.”

“No, you’re not.”

Nathan could tell Lucy was anxious, so he took her hand in his and lifted it to his lips as they rode the elevator down to the lobby to cast their votes. She smiled gratefully at him but quickly returned her attention to the mirrored door.
