Although he acted more like a father than a brother. And that annoyed Kurt more than he admitted. He loved his brother but sometimes he was a pain in the ass.

Pete leaned his hands on the counter and let out a long breath.

“I don’t get why you still work the clubs. They’re dangerous.”

“Everything’s dangerous.” Kurt pointed out. “Pete, I can take care of myself. I’m a licensed doorman, I don’t work alone and Billy pays me well for this.”

“And everything else.” Pete grunted. “I remember the shooting last week while you were re-painting Billy’s house.”

Kurt wished he hadn’t mentioned it to Pete. He had blown it out of proportion. But Pete worked in the homicide division and he always feared he would get the call that Kurt had been killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Being part of a motorcycle club wasn’t exactly an easy ride but it was something Kurt preferred.

He sighed and stretched his legs.

“I can handle it all. Don’t worry about me, Pete.”

“I have to, Kurt. You’re my baby brother. I told Pa I’d look out for you.”

“Pa’s been dead for nearly twenty-five years and I’m not a little kid anymore. I’m more than capable of looking after myself.”

Kurt had trained in kickboxing since he was ten on Pete’s insistence. He had been bullied at school because of his size. Then the kickboxing made him stronger and less reliant on Pete’s backup. As he grew up the bullying stopped and suddenly the girls wanted to know him. But Kurt didn’t. He didn’t forget things like that.

His school years had set him up to face the stronger stuff once he reached adulthood.

“I know.” Pete looked torn as he looked at Kurt. “But you did great looking after that girl. How is she?”

“I haven’t spoken to her yet.” Kurt found himself looking over at the booth again. “She’s shaken but she didn’t get hurt.” He leaned towards Pete and lowered his voice. “I hope you find the guy who did this. Because you know Billy will want to find him first and we both know what he’ll do.”

Kurt had no illusions that Billy was going to let this slide. His boss was a man who took this seriously and made sure everyone knew that they were in trouble. While Kurt had done a few dirty jobs involving beating up those who thought to challenge Billy’s authority, he preferred that his brother dealt with the situation; less mess and Kurt’s other family didn’t get jeopardized.

“I know.” Pete glanced towards the people milling about. Even with their last names being the same not many people knew Kurt’s brother was a cop. Kurt preferred to keep his private life private. “If you find out anything you give me a heads up. I don’t want you getting locked up for something you shouldn’t have done.”

Kurt raised his hand in a scout’s sign.

“I promise.”

Whether he would keep that promise or not was up to Billy. Good man that he was, nobody said no to Billy DuJour.

“How are you doing?”

Neera looked up and her heart stuttered. The bouncer was standing by their booth, seeming to tower over them. Neera felt anticipation tingle through her body. Suddenly her bre*sts were feeling heavier than normal and her core began to throb. She gulped and shifted but the throbbing got worse.

Now was not the time to be fantasizing over the man who had saved her from a hail of bullets. It was probably just the shock of knowing she had nearly been shot.

“I’m okay.” She managed to give him a smile. “Thanks for saving me, both from the bozos and the shooter.”

He smiled back. And Neera thought she was going to melt to the floor in a molten puddle. Damn, he was gorgeous. And definitely not her type.

She really was in desperate need to get laid.

“I’m happy to help.” He held out a hand. “I’m Kurt.”

Neera took his hand. It was warm and rough, encasing her smaller hand and the heat ran up Neera’s arm.

“Neera.” She squeaked. Coughing, she quickly withdrew her hand and indicated her friends. She was glad it was dark or her blushing cheeks would have been noticed. Avoiding his gaze, Neera indicated her friends. “This is Elizabeth and Petra.”

This was when it happened. The moment a guy who thought she was attractive saw her friends they completely lost interest in her. Neera was sure Kurt would do the same thing. But when she glanced up Kurt was still looking at her. The heated look in his eyes had Neera shivering. She was sure Kurt could see her nip*les poking holes through her dress.

Kurt tore his eyes away from her and addressed them.

“How are you girls holding up?”

“We’re okay. Just a bit shook up.” Elizabeth indicated Petra. “Petra’s brush with flying glass is probably the only brush of action she’s going to get tonight.”

Petra scowled.

“Hey, I was getting somewhere with those guys.”

“Which ones? All four of them?”

Neera glanced at Kurt, who raised an eyebrow at her.

“Don’t ask.”

Kurt looked amused. His hand brushed against her shoulder, leaving a trail of goosebumps behind.

“How about you? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” Neera grinned in an attempt to joke. “I’m a little squashed but I’ll manage.”

Kurt’s eyes glanced down at her chest before flicking back up to her face.

“Sorry about that. I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

“I was joking.” Neera touched his arm and squeezed it. “Thank you.”

Kurt looked down at her hand touching his sleeve. He looked back at her and for a moment Neera forgot how to breathe. This man was incredibly intense. He could wring her out to dry if he wanted to.

“Are we allowed to go home soon?” Elizabeth’s voice startled her into reality, making Neera drop her hand.

Kurt turned his attentions to Elizabeth and gave her a smile.

“I’ve spoken to a detective about it and he says once your statements have been taken you can go home.”

Elizabeth huffed.

“Mine hasn’t been taken yet. And I have a shoot tomorrow morning.” Then she glanced slyly at Neera. “But Neera’s already had her statement taken. She refuses to go.”
