While they had been at Billy’s house. Kurt didn’t want to begin to think what would have happened if Neera had been in her apartment.
Hiding his gun back in its holster, Kurt went into the hall. Neera was still there, clutching at her bag. She looked at him with wide, scared eyes.
“The place is empty.” Kurt pulled her into his arms and rested his chin on her head. “But you’ve had a visitor. The place is a mess. Lots of your things have been destroyed.”
He could feel Neera trembling as she whimpered.
“This has to be Jason.” She looked up at him. “It has to be.”
Kurt stayed silent. If he was honest, he wasn’t sure what was going on. It could be Jason getting back at Neera but it had been some months since they broke up and all he had done so far was call and text her. This was an escalation if it was him. And a rapid one.
Another reason could be Kurt’s past. The one killing his ex-girlfriends was now targeting Neera and this was their way of saying he could get to her whenever he wanted. That Kurt didn’t want to think about; Neera was not going to fall victim to that bas*ard.
He would make sure of it.
Gently, he eased Neera back and placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Look at me, Neera.” He kept his voice low and soft. “This is what I want you to do. I want you to go to your room and pack a bag of what hasn’t been shredded. You’re staying the night with me.”
“What about my apartment?”
“I’ll call Pete and tell him. But you can’t stay here tonight.” Kurt urged her into the apartment, gently nudging her into the bedroom as Neera stared in horror at her apartment. “Pack what you need for a couple of nights. We’ll stop for underwear and toiletries on the way to my apartment. Do not go into the bathroom and wait for me by the door.”
Neera didn’t argue. She suddenly snapped into action, grabbing a bag from by the chest of drawers and opening it on the bed. She gave the shredded mess a scared look before turning away and searching through the dresser.
Leaving her alone, Kurt went into the bathroom, wrinkling his nose at the smell. Then he pulled out his cell phone and dialed Pete’s number.
*****
“Neera.”
Neera jumped as someone touched her shoulder. Her vision cleared and she saw Kurt leaning over her, stroking her cheek. She hadn’t realized she had fallen asleep.
Everything seemed to have come down hard on her today. No wonder she was exhausted.
“Huh?”
Kurt smiled.
“We’re here.”
Neera rubbed at her eyes and sat up, barely hiding a yawn.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”
“I understand.” Kurt kissed her forehead. “You’re scared and it’s okay to be.”
“I’m not scared.”
“Liar.” Kurt’s smile died away. He cupped her cheek in his palm. His hand was warm. “I won’t let anything hurt you, Neera. I promise.”
Neera felt herself falling into his dark eyes. God, he was handsome. There was something about him that had her melting inside. If he kept this up she was going to go up in flames.
It would only take just a nudge.
Kurt kissed her, his lips grazing hers before he pulled away. Then he straightened up and helped Neera out the car, reaching in for her bag. They had stopped off at Walmart and picked up some fresh panties, plus a toothbrush and toothpaste and some deodorant. Kurt had told her not to go into the bathroom and from the smell that had been coming from there Neera didn’t want to go anywhere near it.
Kurt kept his arm around her as they went inside and up to his apartment. His place was larger than Neera’s with better-looking furniture. Neera’s was mostly free or second-hand but Kurt’s furniture was all brand new. Neera had been envious at one point but she was happy with what she had. Although she might have to get some new furniture now after what had happened. Everything had been destroyed.
Her favorite DVDs had been snapped in half and ruined. Neera knew she would be in tears about it later. Over something material that could be replaced. But right now she was just glad she hadn’t been there when her intruder had come in. Otherwise it would be a completely different story.
Kurt went into his bedroom and put the bag on the bed.
“You get yourself settled.” Kurt glanced at the clock on his bedside cabinet. It said it was past midnight. “It’s very late.”
Neera hovered in the doorway. Suddenly it was feeling very warm in the room. This would be the first time she had spent the night with Kurt and the anticipation was bubbling up.
“What about you?”
“I’ll sleep on the couch.”
The anticipation died away quickly. He was still being a gentleman in spite of everything. Neera hurried to stand in front of Kurt as he made to leave.
“No, that’s not fair. You should sleep in your bed. I’ll sleep on the couch.”
“Don’t be silly. You’re the guest.”

Kurt tried to step around her and leave the room but Neera stepped his way, placing her hands on his chest.
“I insist.”
Kurt stared at her. Then he looked down at her hands on his chest. Neera could feel the heat of his body through her palms. His heart was hammering against her fingers.
Kurt looked up. His eyes were darker, his pupils dilated. Neera’s breath hitched. His desire was clear in his expression. He wanted her and he was barely holding it back.
