She wanted something new but there was nothing out there just yet. Kurt hoped she got what she wanted one day. Neera was smart and knew what she was talking about whenever numbers came into the conversation. He could see her making a great career out of her dream job.
Taylor smirked as she handed him a steaming mug.
“So no bed action yet, then?” She asked slyly.
“Taylor!”
“Sorry, I’m naturally nosy.”
“Don’t I know it?” Kurt grunted.
Taylor laughed and sat on the stool next to him. Her knee brushed against his and stayed there. Kurt wanted to move but he didn’t want to appear rude. He focused on sipping his coffee.
“So I take it things are going well between you two?” Taylor asked.
“Really well. Neera’s a lovely girl. A bit quiet but I’m slowly changing that.” Kurt grinned. “We’re going paintballing this weekend with a few others from the MC.”
“I bet that’ll be interesting.” Taylor giggled.
Kurt had thought so, too. Neera had always wanted to try paintball so Kurt had asked a few of his bouncer friends if they wanted to team up with their girlfriends for a couple of games. Everyone had been eager to go, including Neera. Kurt wondered if that would change during the weekend.
Taylor placed a hand on his thigh. A little too high for comfort.
“I’m glad you’ve found someone like Neera, Kurt. She’ll be good for you and I think she’ll fit in with us just fine.”
“I think she will, too.” Kurt wished she would move her hand. He sighed. “I’m just a little worried with everything that’s going on. You know, with Rhiannon and the other girls.”
Taylor and Billy were the only ones in DuJour MC who knew about the murders. Kurt had wanted to give Billy the heads-up if Pete suddenly turned up with a team of cops and Taylor had overheard. But nobody else knew. Neera certainly didn’t; while Kurt didn’t want her to be hurt in any way he didn’t her running the other way screaming because she might become another victim.
“None of that is your fault.” Taylor insisted. Her hand squeezed his thigh and seemed to move up his leg. “And Neera isn’t going to come to any harm.”
“Pete thinks otherwise.”
“And your brother worries too much.”
“He’s a cop. They’re groomed to worry.”
Taylor laughed. Finally she removed her hand and sipped at her coffee.
“Neera will be fine with us, Kurt. If anyone hurts her they’ll have to answer to us.”
That was what Kurt liked about being part of DuJour MC. They were like a huge family and looked out for each other. Kurt hadn’t had much of that outside of his relationship with Pete and thrived on it. They gave him a sense of purpose, an identity.
And that’s what he wanted.
He looked around when he heard someone thudding down the stairs and a moment later Neo appeared in the doorway. She was dressed in black trousers that hugged her legs and a black top that showed off her midriff and dipped low to reveal a lot of cleavage. The top looked almost too indecent to go out in. Her hair was held up with so much hair spray Kurt wouldn’t be surprised if he rapped his knuckles on her hairdo and found it to be solid.
“I’m off now, Mom.” Neo picked up her handbag, which sat on the dining table. “Bye.”
“Hey, wait up, Neo.” Taylor put her mug down and slid off the stool. She approached her daughter, who was looking bored. “Where are you going?”
“Out.” Neo sounded like that was a stupid question. “Jason’s meeting me at the cinema.”
Kurt swallowed back a cough. If they were going to the cinema he had in mind, they wouldn’t be going to watch a movie. And if they were, it would be X-rated enough that it would leave anyone with a red face and a painful throbbing between the legs.
“You’re still seeing him?” Taylor looked surprised. “We told you not to go near him. Your father said he was bad news.”
“I’m eighteen now, Mom.” Neo said stiffly. “You can’t tell me what to do.”
“Just try and stop me.”
Kurt watched the interaction between the two women. Taylor and Neo’s relationship had been rocky as of late. When Neo had been younger, barely into her teens, she had been close with her mother. But as she got older she began to turn on Taylor. Kurt had seen them engage in fiery arguments that looked like both were close to hitting the other. Nobody had seen these arguments other than Kurt and Billy; they kept their behavior behind closed doors. Even at the barbecue, Kurt had heard after the fact, the two didn’t start screaming at each other until everyone had left.
Everyone had an appearance to keep up. And Taylor was determined to keep up the appearance of a devoted wife who was a good mother.
If you didn’t include sleeping with people outside the MC group.
“You wouldn’t dare.” Neo snarled. She turned away. “I’m going to see Jason.”
Taylor grabbed at her arm.
“The school called. Your father’s over there right now. They want to know where you are. You’ve been skipping classes most of this year.”
“So what?” Neo looked almost bored. “I didn’t feel like going to school.”
“And that’s the excuse for not going to school? How are you supposed to get a job? I’m not having you hang around us all day doing absolutely nothing and scrounging our money.”
“I’ll get something. Maybe I’ll be a waitress.” Neo smirked. “Oh, a topless waitress sounds like a good idea.”
Kurt watched Taylor as Neo walked out. A moment later the front door slammed. Taylor was standing with her hands on her hips, breathing heavily and clearly trying to control her temper.
“Leave it, Taylor. She’s just doing it to upset you.”
“Well, it’s working.” Looking miserable, Taylor moved back to her stool, slumping onto it and resting her head on her propped up hand. “Why is she such a bi*ch?”
“She’s a strong character, Taylor.” Kurt nudged her. “She’s a lot like you.”

“I wish she wasn’t.” Taylor grunted. “One of these days we’re going to clash and I don’t want to think what will happen.”
Kurt didn’t want to think about it, either. That would put Billy in the middle. He was devoted to Taylor and adored Neo, even with her behavior. Kurt didn’t care much for the girl nowadays but there had been a time when he had been fond of her. Her acting out made him want to smack her around the head but chances were, with that hairspray, Neo would feel nothing.
“She’ll work out Jason’s not the one for her.” He assured Taylor. “She’s an adult now. Let her figure it out for herself. Otherwise she’ll push back and it’ll hurt everyone in the end.”
Taylor sighed. She looked miserable.
“I hope you’re right.”
