“What do you mean?” asked Angie. “You regret starting your firm?”
“No, not at all,” said Matthew. “That was just a joke. I don’t regret anything. Starting the firm meant that I would always have something to leave behind. I own a piece of this city’s legal infrastructure, I own one of the most important aspects of the criminal justice system that has anything to do with this city. It’s just that… it’s been fifteen years, and ten of those fifteen years you haven’t been here. I compensated for your absence by completely drowning myself in my work. I decided that if I did not have my daughter to spend time with, I might as well focus on the only other thing in my life that mattered. I ended up earning a great deal of money, and ended up getting a great deal of respect for myself as well. However, now that everything has been said and done, I’m starting to think that maybe it’s time to call it a day, if you know what I mean.”
“You’re thinking of retiring?” asked Angie, shocked that her father would be thinking of something like this.
“Yes,” said Matthew. “I’m only forty eight years old, I know that’s really young to retire, but I would really prefer retiring before my bones start to get sore, you know? I have money now, and I will always have a share in the profits of the law firm. This means that I will always be able to get a revenue stream and I will always be able to enjoy my life with the money that I am getting from my law firm. I can travel, I can do whatever I want. I think, one of the biggest reasons for me wanting to leave is you coming back. I have my daughter back, you know? I’d want to spend as much time as I can with you. I know that you will have your own things going on, but that suits me just fine because I will have my own things going on as well. I will be able to enjoy everything that I have and not be old while I do it. Isn’t that an amazing thing to have? I have the chance to live the dream that everyone wants to live.”
“I agree,” said Angie. “You should focus on your life. You should focus on living the life that you want to live and doing the things that you actually want to do. That’s what life is about, you know? Doing the things that you actually want to do. If you spend all of your time working, how can you enjoy your life? You don’t want to be on your death bed and have only memories of your work to keep you company.”
“That’s exactly what I’m thinking,” said Matthew. “The thing is, I wouldn’t even be considering retirement if I didn’t have someone like Richard back at the firm.”
Angie’s heart skipped a beat. Richard, he was talking about Richard. She had not realized how much she had wanted to hear his name. She had not realized how much she had craved to hear something, anything about him. She had missed Richard. She couldn’t wait to hear what her father had to say about the man she had not realized how much she had missed this much.
“Richard?” said Angie. “You mean you can trust him, I’m assuming. He’s competent, he’s the one that started the company with you, after all. He can be trusted with handling the company, he can be trusted with making sure that everything that was going on was happening exactly the way that it was supposed to happen.”
“Exactly,” said Matthew. “He’s a very competent lawyer, but I think he will manage the firm even better. The management was always left to me while he handled the bigger cases, but I think that everything he has done so far has been enough. He deserves the top spot now. He deserves to be able to sit in my chair and actually run the firm that he helped establish through his stunning legal expertise.”
“I’m glad that you have somebody to help you in that way, Dad,” said Angie. “I’m glad that you have someone that you can trust to this extent. It’s not every day that people find someone that’s so utterly helpful, so utterly useful. He’s a pretty amazing man.”
“Did you speak to him at all while you were in Kenya?” asked Matthew.
“A few times,” said Angie. “A phone call here and there. Nothing too regular. How is he doing?”
“He’s doing pretty well,” said Matthew. “He’s a lot like you. Still hasn’t gotten married yet. Thinks that finding a partner is not all that important. He doesn’t know you’ve arrived yet because I haven’t told him and since you weren’t speaking to him regularly you probably haven’t either. Shall we have lunch with him tomorrow?”
“Yes that would be lovely,” said Angie.
“It’s not just to catch up,” said Matthew. “I need to tell him my plans to retire as well. I need to let him know that he’s going to be the one that’s handling things at the law firm from now on, that he is going to have a lot more responsibility once I’m gone. I don’t know if he’s going to be willing. We started the law firm together, but I was the one that handled everything and he was the one that took the big cases and won in order to establish the firm’s name.”

“I’m sure it’ll go absolutely fine,” said Angie. “After all, you’re giving him the keys to one of the most prestigious law firms in the city. He’s going to be the only one in charge of everything. He’s going to be the only named partner in the building. Trust me, he’s going to be ready for this and he’s going to be willing.”
They got home and Matthew helped her carry her luggage up. They got to his fabulous penthouse apartment and once they were there he helped Angie get settled.
Angie entered her room and was surprised. It looked truly great. A lot better than she had thought it would look. It was spotless and clean but most of all it was bare. There was furniture such as a bed and a cupboard and a table, but the carpet was brand new and there was nothing on the walls.
She would be able to personalize this room while she was living here. She intended to make this her home for a few months at the very least. She was really going to enjoy her life before she started working again. She had worked nonstop for ten years, she deserved a vacation that was as long as possible.
She smiled as she sat on the bed. It had been so long since she had sat on this bed. She was finally home.
