“Alright,” said Richard. “I have to admit that you have a point. I think that we are going to have to work on this properly. We are going to have to be brave when we tell your dad what’s been going on. There is no way to do this without upsetting him, I’d say, so I think that at the end of the day it’s all going to be about when we do it. The more we delay it, the worse we are going to make this for everybody involved. Let’s just tell him now, and hopefully he will have calmed down enough that we will be able to get him involved in the decisions that go into a wedding, like the date and whatnot.”
“Alright,” said Angie. “Let’s just do it tomorrow night. That will give us an entire day to prepare for it, you know what I mean? That’ll be what we have to do in order to be properly satisfied in our lives. He will be happy too that we are involving him in such an important decision.”
“Agreed,” said Richard. “Let’s tell him tomorrow night. Are you going to invite him or should I?”
“I’ll do it,” said Angie. “I’ll think of an excuse. I think however negative his reaction is tomorrow night, you’re going to be the one that has to bear the worst of it at the end of the day. You’re going to be the one that has to face the bulk of his rage because you are the one that has been fu*king his daughter all this time.”
“Wow,” said Richard. “I mean, I knew I was doing something that I wasn’t technically supposed to be doing but I never really thought of it like that. I never really thought of it in terms of me fu*king my best friend’s daughter.”
“I’m sorry,” said Angie, kissing her soon to be husband on the cheek. “Did it make you feel guilty?”
“Just a little,” said Richard. “It’s okay, I know what I’ve been doing. There’s nothing wrong with it. You’re thirty years old in a few months. You’re old enough to make your own decisions, you don’t have to prevent yourself from seeing anyone because you’re old enough to make those decisions for yourself, which means that I am not taking advantage of you in any way. And that fact that I am not taking advantage of you in any way means that there is nothing wrong with our relationship at all. Don’t worry. We’ve been together for three months now, I rationalized what I was doing in the first month.”
They kissed each other goodbye and Angie headed home. She really dreaded what she was going to have to do right now. She knew that her father wasn’t going to be suspicious at all when it came to her asking him out to dinner with her and Richard, but she was afraid of what she was committing to. There was no way that whatever was going to happen tomorrow would end well for anyone involved. The best case scenario was that her father would get angry and would call off in a week or so. She didn’t think that the best scenario was all that likely. She didn’t think that he would be so forgiving towards his friend if he found out that the two of them had been engaged in a relationship for so long without even telling him.
That was what made this even worse. The fact that she and Richard had kept this a secret. That would probably hurt more than anything else. The fact that his best friend was fu*king his daughter would make him angry but the fact that they had kept it from him for this long? That would hurt him. That would make him sad. They were the two people that he trusted more than anyone else in the world, and both of them had lied to him or kept something so profound from him for three whole months.
Another thing that worried her was the manner in which she would be revealing her engagement to Richard. She would not just be telling her father that she and his best friend had been involved in a physical relationship for three months without his knowledge. They were going to be telling him that they had gotten engaged.
It was true that this would be better than simply telling him they were going out because he would get the feel that they were at least serious about each other, but she still felt bad about the fact that she had been engaged for a week and a half and her father, the only family she had left in the world, had no idea what was going on. She wished that it hadn’t been this way. She wished that she had been able to fall in love with someone that would not have so many problems when it came to her father. But she had fallen in love with who she had fallen in love with. She was not going to apologize for that. She was not going to be made to feel like what she had done had somehow been wrong because it hadn’t been. The relationship itself wasn’t wrong. The fact that they had hidden it from Matthew was wrong, but even that was understandable. What else could they have done? What other option had they had?

They had loved each other for a very long time now, and telling her father put them at risk of not being able to love each other anymore. At the end of the day, Angie and Richard were two humans. They were two humans that had fallen in love, and humans that are in love rarely do the most rational things.
She got home and saw her dad hunched over a book. It was a novel. She couldn’t remember the last time she had seen him reading a novel. He had been so engrossed in his work ever since he had started his own law firm that he had simply not had the time to read anything except for law books. She was glad to see him reading for pleasure now, after so long. Over a decade and a half ago, he had used to read a lot. Novel reading had been his favorite pastime in fact, it had been the thing that had relaxed him the most, the activity he looked forward to more than anything else after a hard day at work. Her mother had enjoyed reading, and Matthew had enjoyed reading books. She was glad that he was getting back to something that probably reminded him of his deceased wife. It meant that he was over her now, well and truly.
“Dad,” she said softly. Matthew looked up at her and smiled. “Hey honey. How’re you doing? Did you have a nice time while you were out?”
“Yeah,” said Angie, shifting her eyes because she did not feel right telling her father that the reason she had had so much fun while she was out had been because she had been fu*king his best friend and long time business partner. “So I wanted to ask you something.”
“Ask away,” said Matthew. He put his book down and sat back. He seemed utterly relaxed. Angie knew that what she and Richard were about to tell him tomorrow was going to rock his world and leave him not nearly as relaxed as he was right now. She knew that in telling him what they were about to tell him, they were going to leave him feeling completely and utterly betrayed, but there was nothing else that they could do.
