Chapter 8

Angie was really enjoying her life. It had been two months since she and Richard had started dating, and every single moment of it had been like something from a dream. She didn’t think that she would ever be able to wrap her mind around just how good she felt. She felt like everything was going according to plan, that if she and Richard were together, nothing in the world would be able to get her down. She had never felt the need to equate her happiness to a single person and she had always been afraid of this happening. But now that it had happened, she was no longer afraid. She was no longer afraid because she had started to feel okay about it. She trusted Richard with her happiness. She trusted him to feel the right thing for her. She trusted him to keep her safe, and to guard her happiness because that was just the kind of person that he was.

She was on her way to her father’s office. She was excited because today was the day that he was going to announce his retirement. He had taken two months to properly get everything in order, and he had done a fine job of it. He had made sure that all of the information that he had had access to during his time as the manager of this law firm would be easily available to Richard, and he made sure that all of the employees knew about all of the things that would change when Matthew left everything to his best friend.

He was happy. He was well and truly happy. This was what made Angie happiest of all. Seeing her father like this meant everything to her. It meant everything to her because it meant that she would be able to enjoy her life properly too. If her father was happy, she would be happier about everything in her life as well. She would be happy because she would be able to feel a lot less guilty about what she had with Richard. She couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt every time she had s*x with Richard. The reason she felt so awkward sometimes was that, at the end of the day, she couldn’t deny the fact that Richard was her father’s best friend. If her father had been upset or miserable or sad in any way, she would have felt even more guilty about what she was doing. However, she did not worry about that anymore. She didn’t worry because she knew that everything she was doing was completely and utterly right. She didn’t need to feel ashamed, and she did not have to compromise on whatever it was that she was feeling in order to make her father feel happy.

She got to the office building where her father’s law firm was and looked around. It was a beautiful building. She would have been rather sad to not be able to see it ever again after her father left. Now, however, she could visit Richard here. She knew that she would have to be very careful about it. She knew that if she wanted their relationship to be on the down low for now, she would have to visit Richard very sparingly, because if she visited him too much people would start talking and word would eventually reach her father that his daughter was visiting the man that was managing his firm for him a little too often. Richard was going to be the manager of the firm now, he was going to be the person that was responsible for handling every single thing that was happening. He was also going to be the only person whose name was on the door in the building. This would make him a very visible figure indeed. It would make him so visible that everything he did would be seen by the employees, and so if he and Angie became a little too cute everyone would know that they were having an affair.

She went up to her father’s office. The door was open. He was not wearing the suit that he usually wore to his office, one of the dozens of suits that he had. He was wearing a sweater and a button down shirt with comfortable cotton pants. She leaned against the door and looked at him, he looked so peaceful. He looked like every single thing that was happening was what he wanted to happen, and that made her so happy. He deserved to feel that way. He deserved to feel like his life was going in the direction that he wanted it to for once, after all these years of feeling trapped or whatever it was that he had been feeling while Angie had been living in Kenya.

She let him work for a bit. He had his back to her and was packing some of the awards he had gotten as the manager of the firm. He didn’t notice her, but as soon as he turned around he saw her standing in the doorway.

“Angie!” he said. “How long have you been standing there?”

“Just a few minutes,” said Angie. “Three at most. You’re really gonna miss this place aren’t you?”

“I am,” said Matthew. “But, at the same time, I am strangely glad that I won’t be seeing this place for a while. I feel like… I feel like I have done enough here, you know? I’ve done enough in this chapter of my life. It’s time to open a new chapter. It’s time to start working on new things, to start working on things that I am doing for me for once instead of for a dozen other people that are, for some reason, dependent on me.”

Angie laughed, walked up to him and kissed him on the forehead. “So what’re you thinking? Are you going to tell everyone now?”

“Everyone already knows,” said Matthew. “I’ve made it obvious enough by the way I’ve been behaving. But I haven’t really officially said anything. I think I’m just going to gather everyone up and tell them that I am no longer going to be running the firm. There needs to be an official announcement, you know? They deserve that level of formality, I think. They deserve to be respected in that way. And besides, it’s going to be a rather emotional moment.

“While you were in Kenya… well, this place became like my home. These people became like my family. They became like my brothers and sisters, my sons and daughters. I feel incredibly connected to each and every one of them, and I want them to know that I am not taking this decision lightly. I want to… I don’t know. I guess I just want to make this as personal as possible. I want them to know that I cared, you know? I want them to know that I didn’t just look at them as employees.”

Angie hugged her father tight and said, “I get what you mean, Dad. You had nothing except this law firm for so long, you had no one except your employees for so long. Of course you are going to feel emotional about this. Of course you are going to feel like you are leaving your family behind. I think everyone is going to need to hear it from you, too. They’re going to need to hear you say goodbye. And after you are done telling them that you are leaving, you can properly say goodbye to each one of them individually. They’ll be glad that you’re doing this.”
