Chapter 6

Richard was busy with work. He was trying to drown himself in as much work as possible in order to stop thinking about Angie. He felt like he had to stop thinking about her, because thinking about her meant that he was doing something wrong. He couldn’t help but feel like he was betraying his best friend by thinking about his only child and daughter in such ways. He couldn’t help but feel like he was doing their decades long friendship a disservice by allowing himself to think such hideous thoughts.

He was working as hard as he could, yet he could not help but think about Angie. He couldn’t help but think about her gorgeous dark skin, he couldn’t help but think about her deliciously wide mouth and full lips, the lovely African hairstyle that her bushy hair had been set in. He couldn’t stop thinking about how beautiful his best friend’s daughter was, and this was a very dangerous way to think indeed. He couldn’t allow himself to think like this about her. He couldn’t allow himself to harbor any kind of attraction towards Angie.

He wished that he could help it. He had been so stupid by asking her about her love life. He had been so stupid by asking her something so personal. Did she know that he was attracted to her now? How would she react to this situation? How would she feel when she thought about her father’s best friend being attracted to her?

He had a feeling that she was just as attracted to him as he was to her, so he was not all that worried about her being grossed out or awkward. He just feared what the mutual attraction would lead to. He feared that the fact that the both of them were attracted to each other might just end up making it all the more difficult for them to feel the way that they were feeling, because they simply could not act on their emotions.

He thought about it long and hard. No, there really was no way that they could act on their feelings of mutual attraction. And this meant that thinking about her was nothing more than torture, because he was simply thinking about something that he could not have.

It had been so easy to talk to her. It had felt so good to advise her, to tell her what she should be thinking or feeling. It had been so easy to make her feel like everything she was doing was good, and that she should not feel guilty about the way she felt. He wanted it. He craved it. And that was what truly made him afraid. The fact that he wanted to like her. It was more than just animal attraction. It went deeper than that, a lot deeper than that. It was the kind of thing that made you forget who you were.

He had not spoken to her in an entire week, and now it was the weekend. He usually worked Saturday and came into the office for a little while on Sundays as well. He decided that this weekend he was going to work extra hard. If he was free even for a moment he might end up acting on his impulses. He hoped that this was simply temporary insanity, and that he would stop feeling this way very soon. He hoped that he would not have to keep avoiding the person that he liked so much, because he would have very much liked to be Angie’s friend. If he allowed himself to stay away from her, these feelings of attraction might end up going away and he would be able to spend some amount of time with her in a purely platonic capacity. He hoped that she would be able to look at things like this too. He hoped that she would be able to recognize that the way she felt about him was not right and that she couldn’t feel this way about her father’s best friend and long time partner.

All of a sudden, there was a knock on the door of his office. “Come in,” said Richard. In walked Matthew. Richard groaned internally. He didn’t know how he was going to deal with the very person whose daughter he was feeling attracted to being in his office.

He thought to tell Matthew that he was too busy to talk, but he simply couldn’t do this. At the end of the day, Matthew was his friend. He didn’t want his friend to feel like he didn’t want to talk to him.

“What’s up, Richie?” asked Matt. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I know that you are extremely busy with the case. I just wanted to invite you to my place for dinner.”

“Dinner?” asked Richard. “You’re throwing a dinner party?”

“Indeed I am,” said Matthew. “I just… I don’t know, I just wanted everyone from the office to come to my place and enjoy themselves for a little while. I wanted them to be able to enjoy their lives and just be with me while I am still a part of this firm. I am going to miss every single lawyer in this firm. I am going to miss every paralegal, every secretary, everyone that was involved in this amazing enterprise. I am going to miss them the way I would miss a family member. I’m sorry to go. I know I have to and all, but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to feel good about it.”

“I understand,” said Richard. “I’m really glad that you’re taking this step, Matthew. Can I bring somebody?”

“Of course you can!” said Matthew. “Do you have a woman in your life that you haven’t told me about?”

“No,” said Richard with a laugh. “No, it’s nothing like that. I just… I’d like to bring a date. It would be better than coming alone.”

That was not the whole truth, of course. The whole truth was that Richard was afraid that he would not help but feel attracted to Angie who would undoubtedly be at the party. He would be able to feel nothing but attraction towards her, but if he had a woman there to keep him distracted he might be able to avoid doing anything untoward, he might be able to avoid doing anything that he might end up regretting.

He called his friend Christine. She was a lovely lady, just not the kind of woman that he was usually attracted to. He wanted to go there with a pretty woman, of course, because it would make him feel good about himself. Every man wanted to feel good about themselves in this way, every man wanted to feel like they were the center of attention, and Richard was no different.

He asked Christine if she would want to accompany him to a party. She was all for it. With that behind him, he decided to get back to work. It had been a good choice to bring a date to the party. It would probably dissuade Angie from approaching him as well, or trying to act on her feelings of attraction towards the man that was her father’s best friend.
