“Wow,” said Richard. “That’s… a lot to take in. I knew that whatever it was that you had to say would be important but… I honestly didn’t think that it would be so dramatic. You’re leaving the firm? Fancy that. James and Breech is not going to be the same without the first name on the door working within its walls. At the end of the day, you need to do what you want to do, Richard. You need to enjoy your life the way you want to enjoy it, so that when the time comes and you finally give in to that morbid specter that looms over us all, you can consider your life well lived. It is very important to be able to look back and see the things you want to see.”

“So you’ll do it?” asked Matthew. “You’ll take the job?”

“Of course I will,” said Richard. “You don’t have to give me half of your shares. I’ll be more than happy with sixty five percent. Besides, I’ll be earning a salary too. And you’ll be needing a great deal of money if you want to travel the world, am I right? You’re probably going to need a great deal of cash to fund all of that traveling.”

The two men stood up and shook hands. “It has been an honor to work with you,” said Richard. “And I am honored that you would think me competent to do your job. But, let’s be fair, it’s not like you had any other options did you?”

The two men laughed and hugged. “I’m sure that you are going to take this firm to even greater heights,” said Matthew. “You are the man that this firm needed. You’re the man that is going to help us reach heights that we had never even dreamed of before. I’m so glad that I have you, my man. Richie, you’re going places.”

“So are you,” said Richard, “just different places.”

They sat down and began to eat and talked of many things. “So,” said Richard. “Now that all of that is over, why don’t you tell us a bit about Kenya, Angie?”

Angie took a bite of her Panini and said, “It’s a lovely country. You’d be surprised at how developed it is. I think that there is a general consensus in the west that Africa is very backwards. I mean, it is not exactly as well developed as Europe or America but that doesn’t mean that it is some kind of cesspool, it’s not as backwards as people make it out to be. Nairobi has high rises and luxury apartments and there are people there that fight for social justice and think about so many different things. It is a pleasure to live amongst such people. You find out that they don’t really think all that differently from us. They care about the same things. They love in all of the same ways. It is such a fulfilling experience to talk to them and see that they are not so different from me. It is so fulfilling to hear from their mouths so many things that we would say.”

“It’s so good that you are able to enjoy that,” said Matthew. “I’m really glad that you went there. It was the best option for you, I think. It was the best place you could go to out of all of the places in the world because it allowed you to be with the kind of people that you wanted to be with for a time.”

“You weren’t based in Nairobi, though?” asked Richard, “Were you?”

“Oh no,” said Angie, “I was based in a more rural area, about thirty kilometers away from Nairobi. I went there from time to time to enjoy the night life. In most situations, the village I lived in was absolutely lovely. However, Nairobi has clubs and a proper nightlife, and sometimes I just wanted to party so I would go there.”

“That sounds like a lot of fun,” said Richard. “Did you work a lot over there? Was it fun to teach all of those children?”

“It was,” said Angie. “It was tough sometimes, it’s a tough job to teach kids that are not used to people actually caring about their futures, but at the end of the day it is really fulfilling to look at a child walk home with a head full of knowledge that you have provided to them. I’m glad that I was able to do that, you know? I’m glad that that was what I have been doing for the past decade.”

All of a sudden, Matthew’s phone began to ring. He answered it and when he put the phone down he looked a little annoyed. “Looks like I’m needed back at the office,” said Matthew. “God, I can’t wait until this is over. I can’t wait until I no longer have to worry about people calling me while I’m in the middle of lunch and asking me to drop everything and fix a problem that they have caused.”

“It’s okay Dad,” said Angie. “I have to run some errands anyway.”

“I wish I could take you,” said Matthew. “I wish you didn’t have to go alone.”

“I’ll take her,” said Richard. “I have a chauffeur, so I can spend time with her as well. Besides, she probably won’t even recognize the city anymore because of how much it’s changed over the past decade.”

“That would be lovely,” said Angie. She was excited that she would be able to spend so much time with Richard. She had been looking forward to this lunch but spending the whole afternoon with him was a very unexpected and much appreciated bonus.

Matthew went off to work and Richard and Angie went shopping. It was going to be a wonderful afternoon, and its aftermath would prove very important for their futures.
