“Oh this is probably that big case in which a former employee is suing his former employer,” said Matthew. “It shouldn’t take long. Richard is a clever devil, I know exactly what he is thinking of right now. He probably thinks that he can simple backhand the opposing law firm! It’s a ballsy move to be sure, but it should be admired for that fact alone. He’ll be around in five to ten minutes. The archives are, thankfully, very well organized. This document isn’t all that well known but it is very old, and we don’t have a lot of very old legal documents. He’s going to be here in no time.”

“Alright,” said Angie. She found that the anticipation was almost too much for her to bear. She could barely think of anything else apart from the fact that Richard was going to be here soon, that he was going to be around her. She couldn’t wait to smell his cologne again, couldn’t wait to hear the calming, soothing timber of his voice. She couldn’t wait to look at him, his solid jaw, salt and pepper stubble and hair that was styled to perfection. She couldn’t wait to just look at Richard, to finally be able to talk to him properly in a way that she would not have been able to talk to him before because they had met in a lift and they had both been in a bit of a rush.

She thought about all of the things that she had missed about him. Richard had never been like a father to her. Matthew was a very good father, and she didn’t really require anybody else in her life to fulfill that role because the man that was actually in that role did the job so exceptionally well.

No, Richard had been more like an uncle. This was a rather odd thing to think because one generally does not feel attracted to one’s uncles.

She couldn’t help but think that in being so attracted to Richard she was doing something wrong. She couldn’t help but think that she was disappointing her father by being attracted to his best friend. What would he think if he found out? What would he say? He surely wouldn’t want her to feel this way about his best friend and partner. He would disapprove, and that would cause a great deal of tension among the people involved. She didn’t want to be the cause of so much tension.

She did not want to think about this anymore so she struck the thought from her mind. She looked at her father and started to talk of other things until Richard entered the office. Her heart pounded as she saw him enter. It pounded as she saw him look at her and smile. She couldn’t stop feeling this way. She had only just met him but it felt like all of the things that they could have felt in the decade that they had been apart were coming crashing down around them.

“Hey Richie!” said Matthew, hugging his best friend tight. Richard looked rather surprised by this. It was clear that Matthew was not normally so affectionate to his best friend. Richard looked at her and gave her a conspiratorial smile. They both knew that the lunch was a way for Matthew to tell Richard something important, and this just made it more obvious. Matthew was overcompensating, Richard probably knew for sure now that his best friend was going to be telling him something that would be very serious indeed.

She liked that conspiratorial grin. She liked that he was so comfortable around her, that they had not lost any of the closeness that they had once enjoyed so much. Indeed, they enjoyed a lot more closeness now. They enjoyed the sort of intimacy that a lot of friends managed to acquire after years of knowing one another. She loved that this was the case with her and Richard. She didn’t want it any other way.

“So,” said Matthew. Looking at Angie and Richard and smiling. “Shall we go?”

“Yes,” said Angie. “I’m starving!”

They left for a café that was nearby, a little place that served Panini sandwiches and really good ones at that. She really liked the place when she entered. She had vague memories of it and had a feeling that her father had eaten lunch here a lot. It was one of those things that was a big part of your life but you didn’t really think about it. You didn’t really think about things that were so completely entrenched in your life that you didn’t feel the need to talk about them. Things that were a part of your daily routine. She felt like such things were taken for granted, that when the time came they were missed when they could not be enjoyed on a daily basis the way they normally were.

They ordered their food and started to talk. They made a lot of small talk before Richard said, “Look, Matt. I don’t need you to make small talk. I already know that you have called me to this lunch because you want to tell me something. Just go for it. Tell me what it is. Tell me what you are dying to tell me, because honestly I am dying to hear it.”

Matthew chuckled and said, “Nothing gets past you, Richie. Look, as you know we have been running this firm for a decade and a half now. I have been the controlling force and you have been the driving force. Both of us have made this firm one of the most prestigious places to get legal assistance in the entire city. We have done that together. However, you are also well aware of the fact that out of the decade and a half that we have been doing what we are doing, my daughter has been absent for an entire decade of it. She just got back. When she called me and told me that she was coming back, I realized something. I realized that I had not been living. I had been working so hard but I had been missing out on all of the things in life that are supposed to be experienced.

“A decade ago, my wife died and my daughter left the country to go and live in Kenya. I dealt with these losses by working as hard as I could. But now, my daughter is back and I don’t want to work anymore. Isn’t that odd? The very desire to work is gone now, it has been replaced by a burning to desire to spend time with Angie, to hear her stories and simply be with her. I know that she is going to want to live her own life too, she is probably going to want to go and do things that are going on, they are things that everyone wants to do. During these things I want everyone to experience, I want to experience them too. I want to travel while I can’t spend time with my daughter. I want to see the world, a world that I have been living in for so long. No, I have been existing in it, but I haven’t been living at all. I want to start that now.

“And so, I am retiring. At the age of forty eight, when I am still more or less young, while I still have the strength to actually do the things that I want to do. And when I retire, you are going to get complete control of the company. You can get half of my stakes in the law firm which means that you will get seventy five percent of the profits after the payments have been distributed to all of the partners, and I will get my twenty five percent and use it to fund my travels and what not.”
