“Thank you. You have no idea what this means to me.” He stood up then and came to kneel in front of her. Wary, but trusting, she let him take her hand.

“Your mother asked me a question… if I had not learned about the baby, would I have come? In all honesty, I do not know. All that I know is that there wasn’t an hour that went by that I did not think of you. I nearly went crazy from missing you. I was so miserable. I forgot what happiness was and only lived in pain. I guess a part of me was just buying time. Buying time until the company to stand on its feet, then I would come for you and hope that you would still be willing to take me back; to forgive me. It was either that or go mad for real. Zoey, I have never loved anyone the way I love you. And I want you to know that this baby,” He touched her stomach, “and the truth might have hastened things up, but I would have come anyway. I would have come for you. Even if it was ten years from now. This love… it’s not something you ever recover or move on from. Never. I haven’t had a decent meal in months, or a decent laugh… the only times I smile are when I see your pictures-” Her eyes widened and he added, “Yes, I have been secretly stalking your Instagram.”

“What?”

“I’m Joey Bass. Rings a bell?”

But of course. He liked and made comments on every single picture.

“My goodness! Xen!”

“I couldn’t help it. I am addicted to you, Zoey. And I never want to get clean. Please, forgive me. Give me this chance; let’s start again. I’ll make up for everything and I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make you forget this pain I’ve put you through these past few months.”

Oh, but he sounded so sincere and she felt all of it in her heart.

“Xen, the rest of your life?”

“The rest of my life. I always knew I would marry you, Zoey. From that very first day we shook hands at lunch in Gruby’s. I didn’t know when or how, but I knew I would and as we spent more time together and I came to fall in love with you, I knew I was only bidding my time. Zoey Martins, I know now is not the right time, but if you would give me a second chance, I promise to court you, and date you, and woo you and make you fall in love with me all over again. And when you finally feel secured enough to give your heart back to me, I promise to make you my wife.”

This was all she had ever wanted. Right in front of her. This man, those promises. A home, family… kids. Christ! How could she say yes? But how could she say no?

Life was all about risks, was it not? And taking blind leaps of faith? This man had loved her intentionally and had only left for situations beyond his control. And now, he was back, begging to love her once more. Why wouldn’t she give him a second chance? Give them both, a second chance?

“On one condition…”

“Anything…”

She was going to say something else, but that light of hope that instantly sparkled in his eyes drove her thoughts elsewhere and she found herself grinning sheepishly as she responded,

“That you carry me up that stairs to my room, and make sweet love to me. It’s been too long.”

Before she finished speaking, he was lifting her in his arms as though her 160+ lbs. weighed nothing.

“For me too, my love. I am at your service.”

“For you? But-”

“I never touched her. Or anyone for that matter. No one came close. No one could, not after experiencing how magical it could be, with you.”

“Oh…” this made her even happier.

“Well then, Mr Li, we best make up for lost time.”

“I like the sound of that, Miss Martins.”

That afternoon, he gave her just what she had missed and she gave him in return, and more. And as they lay, thoroughly spent after several rounds, they made promises of love and forever, over and over again.

The end.
