Chapter 2

Xen Li stood half naked in front of his dressing table, waiting for the person on the other end to pick up the call. The land line had rung twice while he was in the bathroom and he had come straight here to return the call the moment he had stepped out.

Because he hadn’t even bothered to clean his body, water dripped from his hair and torso, soaking the towel that rode lowly on his waist. He hated leaving messes behind for his staff, but they would have to take care of this one. After all, it was what they were paid for, wasn’t it? Very handsomely, for that matter.

As familiar arms began to snake around his torso, he got pulled out of his thoughts. Turning a little, he looked at the reason why he had stayed longer in the bathroom.

“One of the boys will take you home and see that you are well compensated for your time,” he said as she finished dressing. This time, his tone was kinder.

She kept mute, saying nothing. He did the same, patiently waiting for her to walk to the door. As she reached it, he braced himself for what was to come.

“Fu*k you!” she swore in Mandarin. Then, she was out of the room, the door slamming with a loud bang after her.

He heaved a sigh of relief. Ah… women. They were all the same.

For a fleeting moment though, he wondered if the woman at the casino yesterday was this way. For some reason, he doubted it.

He had schooled in the states, so he was quite familiar with their women too. He was no saint. He had dated a handful, rumpled the sheets with many more. When they were told they had to leave the next morning, American women did not give as much fuss as Asian women did. Nevertheless, some of them did put up some attitude.

Oh but that woman at the table… Miss Martins, they had called her. She had appeared to be one of those women that simply did not care; strong, powerful, overly confident.

Even the strongest of Chinese women he knew who could single-handedly disarm ten guys with no weapons did not walk around with such confidence. There was also the fact that she had won him at poker. He had played poker all his life. Mastered it like an art, just like he had mastered the art of business. He had only lost a few times, and to people who he had deemed overly worthy opponents. Never to a woman.

Oh, but she had outsmarted him. He who knew how badly distractions worked against one’s favor. Yet, he had let himself be distracted.

He had sighted her the moment she entered the casino. In fact, the moment she first stepped into the hotel. She did not know it yet, but he has had his eyes on her. There was just something about her…

It was her laugh that had caught him first. He had been at the lobby the day she had first arrived with her friends. Overly boisterous, full of life – as were her friends. They had all been beautiful and he was not the only man whose attention they had gotten.

Ah. But it was Miss Martins who had caught his attention. Then, she had asked for one of the best and biggest suites in Li’s Hotels. Amazing. One could only imagine his surprise when he had seen her at the casino, later that same night.

He loved being around his property, especially when he was taking short-lived breaks like the one he had been on, for the past two weeks. Being away from the company helped him enjoy the service his hotel and casino offered. It also helped him assess how well they were doing. As the CEO of such a successful conglomerate, he never wished to slack or drop from their position of number one.

So last night, he had been at the casino again and had noticed the moment she stepped in, the moment she began to walk towards their table and the moment she stopped.

His loins had been fired with the flames she carried, and he had nursed a boner from that point until he had finally decided to call in Su to relieve him. Imagine the pain he had been in. Nothing he had thought of, no matter how horrible, had ridded him of it. Nothing.

Xen wasn’t a man who made excuses for his failure, but having the upper hand in a poker game wasn’t so easy, when one had to worry about blue heads. It was little wonder she had won.

Even his attempts to distract her had not worked.
