Chapter 11

Xen looked at the cards she had just played, his mouth giving way to a surprised O shape.

“That’s not possible.”

Zoey laughed, thinking of how predictable he was. She had been expecting exactly that. It was always the way he reacted when she pulled a move he had not been expecting.

“Of course it is.”

“How?” He asked as he looked up at her. “How do you always manage to get cards this good? Some luck, I call it. ‘Because I know you better not be cheating.”

Her voice rang loud and true as another crack of laughter rippled through her.

“I guess you could call it luck and skills. Many people would get the right cards, but would be totally clueless when it came to playing them right.”

“Huh.” He simply said, as he took one longer look at the cards.

They were in her living room, seated on the floor with their legs crossed, playing poker. After that little fries fail, he had suggested ordering something, but she had refused. She still had some potato left, and that was frankly the only thing that got ruined. The rest of dinner couldn’t go to waste.

So, he had asked for an apron and joined her as she peeled and fried more potatoes. Then, he had helped her set the table while she cleared up the kitchen. After dinner, they had done the dishes, together… and that was when they had decided to play poker to pass the time, while their meals got digested.

Yep. CEO of Li Groups had been in her kitchen tonight with an apron; he had cooked and done the dishes. For her. That was when it had become clear and useless to deny. She had fallen in love with this man. But how could she not? He was as good as good men came. He was utterly wonderful and she couldn’t stop asking herself if this was real.

She had always longed for a man who would be this way with her. This thing with Xen, whatever it was… it didn’t matter that she had experienced its semblance before. With him, it was completely different. It felt… somewhat new.

And now that she knew how deeply she had fallen for him and would continue to fall, she couldn’t stop the panic that had begun to spread through her mind. She feared that he would just wake up and leave someday, without even thinking that she deserved so much of an explanation; he wouldn’t be the first, but she had been hoping that her ex would be the last.

Xen must have decided that there was no use disbelieving what was right in front of his eyes, so finally, he heaved a deep sigh. When he looked up at her, it was with a smile that made her breath catch.

“I guess you are right. You know what? Forget poker, I’m the lucky one here tonight.”

His hands reached out and closed around her wrists. She went freely when he started to draw her towards him, clearing the cards out of the way. In no time, she was in his arms, settled between his legs which had spread out from under him, to accommodate her.

Her face hurt from the crazy grin she couldn’t get off her face, but she didn’t mind one bit.

“Really? How so?” He was getting at something. Zoey had a feeling she knew exactly what, and she was willing to play along; anything to keep her in his arms.

“You may have the best cards in your hands, but I’m the one with the best woman in his arms. Gorgeous, super intelligent, s*xy. Now tell me, who’s the lucky one here?”

Her answer never came. Whatever it was she had planned to say was swallowed in a kiss as he swooped down to take her lips in his.

Of their own accord, her arms snaked around his neck and held on, drawing him closer as she welcomed him, once again.

There was something about his voice, that steely tone that said “I won’t be disobeyed”, that drove her wild.
