The news had said that Xen and his wife had separated on grounds of unresolvable differences, but she knew bullsh*t when she saw one. That wasn’t the entire story, but she wouldn’t push. She already had more insight into who this man truly was, than she had hoped for. For tonight, it was enough.

“Your niece is very beautiful. There are a couple of her pictures plastered all over the internet.”

“Not to mention, she has over one million followers on Instagram who are crazy about her. Yes, she’s beautiful. She’s my world.”

The genuine and fierce emotions behind those words were loud and clear. Xen did not joke with his niece, period.

“And her father?”

“A mistake Chuang regretted making until her last day. He was a good for nothing boy who took advantage of her innocence in a strange man’s land. I’m happy he’s out of our lives for good.”

“He’s white?” She had figured as much.

“Yes. Chuang met him in Yale.”

“Oh… turned out to be a douche bag huh?”

“A royal one. The best thing he did for Chuang was bolting when he heard she was pregnant. I can still remember it like yesterday. She called me crying. She was so afraid of what Mother would say. She was afraid father would be disappointed. I told her we’d work things out, and we did. When Yuri came, Mother fell in love and forgot all her anger. Father… was disappointed, yes. But he forgave her long before Yuri. He too, fell in love at first sight.”

He had a wonderful family; or rather, he had had a wonderful family. That much was easy to see. No man who grew up with such love was incapable of giving or receiving it.

“You have a beautiful family.”

“One that I count as my greatest blessing, thank you.”

The rest of the night went fairly well. It was almost midnight when they said farewell to each other and went their separate ways.

As Zoey drove home, she couldn’t help playing the entire evening over and over again in her head. Xen Li was a very interesting man indeed, and she knew that she was in trouble.

If she had been attracted to the man when he had been annoying Stoic-face, she feared that if they continued this way, she ran a risk of being more than just attracted. Love wasn’t something she wanted to risk again. Not if it meant that she would simply get hurt all over again.

Was there a place for her in Xen’s life? She thought not.
