Chapter 3
Lila got up, frantically dusting herself off, embarrassed to no end that she had just collided into this man. She looked at him and was once again surprised by how ridiculously handsome he was. His hair was a light brown and was styled to perfection, the sort of hair that takes just the right amount of effort to pull off. Lila loved men that put effort into their hair, but not so much effort that they spent hours every single day trying to look good.
His body was muscular, she could see it through the checked shirt that he was wearing. His arms were solid and lean, and had just the perfect amount of hair on them. She could just imagine how much hair he would have on his chest, and the prospect aroused Lila to say the least.
His face looked as though it had been chiseled into a block of solid marble. He had a powerful jaw, one that would be nearly impossible to break in a fight, and his eyes looked like little chips of gray flint. It was a different color than what Lila was used to, a kind of somber gray that made him look older somehow. It suited him. The whole look suited him a great deal. Even though he was probably no more than a year or two older than Lila, she felt as though she was in the presence of a much older man. Perhaps it was the fact that he looked so wise, as though he had seen a lot over the course of his life. This attracted her to him even more.
He helped her up, laughing as he did so and said, “I am so sorry, l was not seeing where I was going, this is completely my fault.”
“Oh no,” said Lila, “no not at all, do not be silly. I was the one that wasn’t looking where I was going, do not worry about it.”
“Well you did fall pretty hard,” said the man, “it would be difficult not to worry.”
He extended his hand and said, “My name is Kurt, Kurt Dennison.”
“Dennison,” said Lila thoughtfully. “Are you, by any chance, the owner of this place? It is called the Dennison Ranch, after all.”
Kurt laughed and said, “Yes ma’am, I am the owner of this establishment. What’s your name? How long have you been staying here?”
“Oh I just got here this afternoon,” said Lila. “My name is Lila. My friend won some money so she brought me here for my birthday. We are going to be staying here for about a week.”
“Well that is a mighty good friend you have there,” said Kurt, “I would tip my hat to her, except my hat is back in my car. Are you enjoying your stay here so far?”
“It’s… nice, yeah,” said Lila uncertainly. For some reason, she could not lie to Kurt the way that she had been lying to Louise for so long.
“You seem uncertain,” said Kurt. “Is there anything about this place that you find… unsatisfactory perhaps?”
“No, no,” said Lila quickly. “No, it’s not that, this place is really relaxing and I am sure that everyone else enjoys themselves a lot. You have some pretty great facilities here that give some great value for money, after all. It’s just that… I have always loved ranches. I have loved them ever since I was a little girl, you know? I love everything about cowboys and the wild west and all of those things. I have always wanted to live at a ranch, in fact, I have always wanted to work at a place like this. And so when my friend told me that we were going to be going to a ranch I was really excited. I assumed that we would be going to… well, a real ranch. When I got here I was surprised, because this place is nothing like a real ranch. There are aspects of a real ranch here and there, but it’s pretty much just been turned into a gimmick. There is a huge swimming pool, an expensive gym, expensive restaurants, a night club, even the horses seem like they would cost more than most people’s houses. It just doesn’t make sense to me to have so much opulence and to advertise it as a ranch. It’s not a ranch, it’s a resort. A spa resort or whatever you want to call it.”
Kurt gave her a look of surprise. It was pretty clear that he was not used to hearing people criticize his businesses. “I… I had no idea that anyone would feel this way,” he said to her. “Everyone I have ever asked has loved these hotels that I have set up. They all wanted more, in fact, I couldn’t build them fast enough. But… I think you have a point. This place is rather removed from my roots. Would you… would you like to have a drink with me? I just want to talk to you, get to know your opinion regarding why this ranch is not everything it can be. You seem to have a good idea about what people are looking for when they request an authentic experience, and I would really like to pick your brain about the whole thing.”

Lila was surprised. She had not been expecting this extremely handsome man to ask her out like this. Frankly, she was not used to so much attention from men. She was an extremely beautiful woman, with curves in all the right places and a beautiful face with sharp and regal features to boot, it was just that most men tended to feel somewhat intimidated by her. She had a very ominous look about her person, she had been told, and this made a lot of men feel like they could not approach her. She did not mind. She rarely ever enjoyed the company of men, if ever. She preferred to have s*x that was emotionally detached so that she would not find herself tied down to someone that she did not really like all that much.
She was extremely attracted to Kurt, and she wanted to go out with him. Hence, she said, “Yes, I would love to have a drink with you. Shall we head to the night club?”
“No,” said Kurt, “I mean, that place is nice but it is way too noisy. There is another bar at the back of the hotel, it’s a lot quieter. I do not advertise it on purpose. It is for the sort of people that explore the hotel properly, only those that actually pay attention to their surroundings would be able to find it.”
“That sounds really interesting,” said Lila. “I would love to go there. I feel the same way about the night club, by the way. It’s a nice touch and I think all hotels should have a place like that where you can drink and unwind and party, but at the same time I just do not see why such a place would be considered relevant at a ranch.”
“It should not be considered relevant,” said Kurt. “Not at all. You are right. You see? These are the kinds of things that I need to discuss with you! Come, let’s go to the bar at the back of this hotel.”
