“Exactly!”

Rachel quirked up an eyebrow as she looked at her ex-boyfriend and current patient. They were sitting too close to each other on the sofa bed. It was 3am and Rachel couldn’t sleep so she was keeping an equally awake Emilio company. They were both exhausted.

Three hours of intense physiotherapy had been followed by dinner and drinks and then Rachel had invited him in for a night cap. They leaned against each other’s shoulders because sofa beds did not lend themselves to dignity and grace.

“The movie fu*ked me. The 60’s version with that chick. You know, the one from Stephen King’s ‘It’. Remember?”

“Olivia Hussey. Leonard Whiting played Romeo.” Rachel was a font of unimportant facts.

“Yeah. Gorgeous people. You notice that? Watched it in high school English class and I couldn’t get over how pretty they were…”

“Not as pretty as me, though, right?” Rachel laughed, bumping into him as her weight shifted with the laugh.

“Rach, you’re not in the ‘pretty’ category.” Once again Rachel’s eyebrow quirked.

“I’m not? Well, then, tell that to the players, ‘cause they seem to think otherwise.” She was still smiling. Pretty is as pretty does, after all.

“Well, they don’t see you like I see you.” It was a statement and it sounded very final. It made Rachel curious as to how Emilio saw her, as to what he considered her. And she refused to admit she felt disappointed that Emilio didn’t believe her pretty. Emilio clarified his statement by saying, “You’re beautiful, Rach.”

Okay, so maybe letting Emilio drink before bed wasn’t a good idea but they’d had a hard day and it was late. Rachel didn’t have the energy to say no to a couple double shots of Cuervo. Emilio was sleeping over because, well, it was late and he was in pain and drunk and…because and it’s no big deal except now Rachel was thinking it was. Emilio’s face was too close to hers, his upper body was too close to hers, his thigh was practically fused to hers. And suddenly she couldn’t breathe. She swore Emilio’s gaze fell to her lips as if he was imagining kissing her. What the hell was that about?!

His heartbeat still sounded loud, pulsing too hard and too fast in his veins, a dull rhythm in his ears.
