“I can’t.”

“That’s not how a relationship works,” she said. “That’s not how a relationship with me works. I should’ve known you were just like Da—”

“Don’t you dare compare me to him.” Clifford loosened his grip on her wrist. “I’m not him. I would never hurt you.”

She yanked away from him. “You already have.” She brushed past him and managed to open the door a couple of inches before it stopped. She saw his arm in her peripheral, dropping her eyes to keep from looking at him she said, “I want to leave.”

“I can’t let you.”

“You don’t have a choice. You can’t keep me in here.”

“If you just let me explain…”

“I tried, Clifford. I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. You don’t know how hard it is for me to do that, especially after I have been let down by man after man after man. I opened myself up to you. I believed in you when my head warned me not to. And look what happened. You let me down just like them. You’re no different. I was right at the beginning of the trial. You showed me the sleazebag you were and I didn’t believe you. Shame on me.”

His swiftness didn’t allow her enough time to react as he lunged at her. Clifford mashed his mouth against hers in what could be considered an attempt to swallow her whole.
