“I wasn’t expecting you.”
She said, “I wasn’t expecting to come over, but” —she hunched her shoulders—“here I am.”
“What’s up? I mean, how are you? How are you feeling? I gave a lot of thought to what happened and you have every right to be upset. I know I came off sarcastic in the car, but I really am sorry. I haven’t treated you fairly. I haven’t been communicating like I should. I—”
“I think I love you.”
“What?”
Mia took a moment to gather her thoughts. “I don’t know when or why it happened. I’m not even really sure if that’s what I feel. But I know I feel something. Again, he didn’t answer right away. After several minutes, he exhaled deeply. “It feels good to hear that.” He looked at her. “I have feelings for you to. And they scare me. I’ve never been with a woman like you.”
“You’ve had your fair share of young girlfriends.”

Not knowing what to say, she slapped a pattern on her thighs. “Well this is going better than I expected.” The pattern continued. “Now that we know how each other feels, what do we do now?”
The room grew deathly silent.
Without warning, Clifford pushed Mia to her back, sucking down her gasp.

He kissed her before holding a finger over her lips. “For the rest of the night, the only word I want to hear you say is my name.” He eased her back and climbed on top of her. Pulling the sheets over them ensured that their secret would remain between them.
