looked up from the typing she was doing and stared at the belligerent woman. “About what?”
“Don’t play games with me,” she said coldly as she came in and closed the door behind her. “I want to know what that jerk told you. I understand you have been spending a lot of time with him. Trying to make sure your job is secured?” she asked sweetly.
“I am not you, Lucinda. I don’t sleep my way to the top. I actually work for the promotion,” told her coolly.
“You bitch!” Lucinda snarled as she came closer to her desk. “You think you are so special because you get to stay? I guarantee you that you won’t last three months.”
“We will see.” was determined not to be nettled by the older woman. “Is that all?”
“For now.” Lucinda moved away from the desk. “Lincoln and I brought you into this company and that is the gratitude you show us?”
“I came into this company because I was qualified. I don’t owe you anything.”
Lucinda stared at her for a moment and then without another word she stormed out slamming the door shut behind her.
leaned back and closed her eyes wearily. It was pure chaos and uncertainty around the office these days. Just this morning while she was going to the coffee machine in the lunch room she had heard whispering from the receptionists and some of the people in accounts. They had stopped abruptly as soon as they had seen her enter the large room. Even her own team looked at her warily as if they expected her to report on them. She was getting sick of it! She had gone on her vacation and everything had been okay only to come back to an entirely different place altogether! A place where distrust was the order of the day! Her eyes flew open as her door was opened again and she got ready for another battle but it was just Jenny, one of the receptionists. “Sorry to bother you, , but may I speak to you for a bit?”
“Sure,” she said with a forced smile.
“I am worried,” she said as she took her seat. “I have a sick mother who depends on me and I have a student loan I am still paying off.”
“I am not the person to come to about that, Jenny.”
“You spend a lot of time with Mr. Collins so I wonder if you can put in a good word for me.” She twisted her hands and had a look of misery on her attractive face. “I cannot afford to lose my job.”
“And I am sure you won’t,” assured the girl.
“They are saying that you are tight with him,” she added.
“Who are they?” asked her coolly.
“I was the one defending you,” Jenny hastened to assure her. “I know you do not do that sort of thing.”
“I don’t!” she said a little sharply.
“I am sorry I brought it up.” The girl got to her feet hastily and got ready to leave. “I am scared. We all are.”
closed her eyes wearily. He was going to have to address them.
