Chapter 1
read the text message over and over until she could repeat it word for word. “I am very sorry to cut your vacation leave short but you are required to report to the offices as a matter of urgency.” It had come from the director himself, Lincoln Rosewood, so that meant it had to be something very important. She was tired. She had taken the several days and had gone on a trip to visit her mother in the UK and had spent the time helping her to clean up the house she had bought recently and had helped her to move in. She frowned as she read the message again. She had no anxiety about losing her job. As head marketer for the telecommunications company she was quite confident in her abilities to maintain her position in the company. She had been hearing rumors of lay off and cutbacks but she had thought that they were just rumors. In her gut she recognized that something was up. In all her years on earth she was wise enough to trust her instincts. With a sigh she ran long tapered fingers through her hair before going to get ready. She had been asked to be there by nine and it was already eight thirty. traffic tended to be heavy at this time of the morning. What was she saying? It was always heavy no matter the time of day! It would take her a good twenty minutes to reach the office and she did not want to be late.
She rifled through her closet to select something appropriate for a battle if need be. She took out a simple black skirt and chose a white silk blouse to go along with it. It was the middle of January and the weather was not very pretty. She made quick work of getting ready and twisting her length hair. She put it on top of her head. Then she was on her way.

Jason Collins perused the documents in front of him with a slight frown on his otherwise smooth face. The takeover had gone smoother than he expected and he was sitting in an office assigned to him by one of the secretaries so that he could study the details of the company before he went into a meeting with the heads of the company. ‘Communications Link’ had been losing money for the past three years and had been using their foundation that handed out scholarships to schools in troubled areas to cover up the fact they were heading to bankruptcy. Jason’s company, Collins Holdings, bought companies that had potential but were barely getting by and did a clean-up operation before setting them back on their feet. Sometimes he put some of his management teams in place and kept the companies as part of his own or he would sell them at a profit. The communications company had the right approach but the management team was pretty weak. He had seen where they hired people from all over the world and provided them with ridiculous benefits such as high end vehicles and houses with exorbitant rents. Not to mention the fact that they put their children in the best paying schools! He intended to get rid of all of them and start fresh.
He looked up as there was a knock on the door. “Yes?”
“Head of marketing is here now, sir,” the secretary said respectfully as she came into the room. “They are all set up in the conference room.”
“Thank you,” he responded briefly, his dark blue eyes swiftly moving over her professionally made up face. “Lacy?”
“Yes, sir?” She nodded with a pleased smile.
“Tell them I will be right there.”
He finished drinking the rest of his coffee and lingered a little bit in the office before making his way towards the conference room. He ignored the curious gazes that were on him as he made his way in and deliberately went to the head of the long table. Someone had put some refreshments on a side table along with freshly brewed coffee and jugs of orange juice. The table was already filled with the men and the two women who were a part of the management team. His eyes went over them briefly. He had met Lucinda Logan who was one the vice presidents but the younger woman was a stranger to him. He had been told that she was off on vacation and would be here for the meeting.
“Um, ladies and gentlemen, this is Jason Collins of Collins Holdings,” president of the company, Lincoln Rosewood, said with a nervous look on his florid face. “He is here to address us on what to expect with the takeover.” He gestured to the younger man and sat down heavily.
Jason took his place at the head of the table and remained standing. “Before I go into a lengthy discussion as what this will mean to the future of Communications Link, I am going to ask the head of marketing to give us an update. I have already heard from the rest of you in this room so that leaves only her.”
looked around the room swiftly, feeling slightly apprehensive. She had been apprised of the situation as soon as she came in and had been shocked to realize that they were under siege so to speak. She got to her feet and went to the projector.
“I don’t need to see visuals. I just need you to give me a brief summary on what you are working on so far.”
took a deep breath and turned to face the man who was looking at her with an unreadable expression on his darkly tanned handsome face. His dark brown hair was brushed back severely from his face and his dark blue eyes were steady on her.
“We have done a lot for the schools located in the less desirable neighborhoods. Our latest is Queens High and we have managed to upgrade their classrooms, add a computer room along with the latest in desktop computers, and set up an ongoing lunch program to feed the children who are not able to afford it. Communications Link is a very influential and necessary company to the communities around and has been doing wonders to lift the morals of the people we serve. We are-”
