Chapter 4

Snow drifted down through the night sky, and Tina tightened her jacket more closely around herself. Arnie looked over his shoulder at her, flakes dotting his black fur. He blinked and shook himself, making his tags jingle.

“Don’t worry,” Tina told him. “We’ll get warmed up soon.”

They walked through the quiet street, Arnie kicking up snow. He sneezed, digging his nose in the beginning of a pile at the base of a streetlamp. Arnie lifted his leg, his yellow stream melting the snow. Tina glanced sideways, hearing a door open in the snow-influenced silence, and a trickle of music escaping. A man tugged his hat down over his eyes, pulling his long coat around himself. He nodded at Tina, and she nodded back before he trotted away, heading down the street in the opposite direction.

Arnie wagged his tail, tongue spilling out in a doggy grin. Tina smiled back. “Are you ready to go?”

The snow made a blanket over Arnie’s back as they walked on, flakes catching in Tina’s lashes. If it kept snowing like this, there’d be a white out, and the city would be stalled until it could be cleared up. In the distance, she could make out a figure waiting at a corner, outside a familiar bar. The Scarlet Co*k was warm, and music played, and beautiful women stole secrets from men who didn’t know any better. Hiro went there sometimes, when Dai was out of town. Sometimes she tagged along just to see how the other half lived.

She bumped into someone while she was distracted, “Oops, sorry.”

“No my fault, sorry,” a deep familiar voice said in reply and she looked up in surprise to see Aiden with the most gigantic cat she’d ever seen in his arms.

“What are you doing here?” she demanded.

“Walking my cat. What are you doing?”

“This isn’t even your neighborhood!”

“Oh I wasn’t aware there was a ban on walking cats in other neighborhoods.”

“And cats aren’t even walked.”

“Mine is,” Aiden said and put the freak of nature down. It promptly wrapped itself around Aiden’s leg but desisted when Arnie came sniffing around in curiosity. Its hackles rose, and it hissed at the dog, who was literally taken aback at the hostility. He barked inquiringly at John who purred back.

“Told you they’d like each other,” Aiden said smugly.

Tina wanted to stick her tongue out at him and maybe sneer too but he was distracting her and she wasn’t about to let him.

“Are you stalking me?” she demanded.

“No! God, I’m a twenty five year old billionaire and you’re like a thirty five year old grunt. Why would I stalk you?”

Tina lifted her brow, “You tell me.”

Aiden mumbled something inaudible and turned away to watch the animals.

“Wanna have a drink or something?” he said inclining his head at the pub.

“Yeah I could use a hot toddy, and that bar allows animals.”

“Great. Let’s do it.”

*****

“Come on.” He grabbed Tina by the arm and bulldozed his way out onto the dance floor.

Tina was busy giving him the are you crazy look, and Aiden swung her around, yanked her close, their chests bumping. “Okay, Tina. Wow me with your moves.”

Then the pets were there, starting to become agitated which made Tina come back to earth, looking around and realizing that they were in public. And it was one am in the morning. How had that happened? Tomorrow was a work day.

“I need to go home,” she declared.

“Yeah, I should take you. It’s really cold out and I have my car.”
