Chapter 1

Tina Richardson hated holidays people tended to mark with fireworks. Like Independence day for example; For one thing, she strongly felt that it had nothing to do with her seeing as her ancestors were still slaves when America broke away from England and went its own way. For another thing; she hated fireworks. They reminded her of the old neighborhood when it was New Year’s and she never knew if those popping noises she was hearing were gunshots or fireworks.

Her best friend in fifth grade had been killed in a robbery gone wrong during New Year’s. There were people next door but they’d thought the popping noises were just the fireworks going off. She’d bled out on the floor of her apartment while her parents rang in the new year at a party one floor down. The robbers hadn’t even taken much. There wasn’t much to take. Just an old transistor radio, fifty dollars in cash and a box full of precious stones the thieves had probably thought were valuable but were actually just colored stones Tina and Malia had collected on a day trip to the beach.

Tina had never stopped feeling guilty about it. If they hadn’t collected the stones then maybe…

But it was spilled milk and there was no use mulling over it now. She just had to get through this New Year’s and do her best to ignore the fireworks. Not that it was easy living right in the middle of New York. Her phone lit up and she looked down at it.

“Right. On. Time.”

It was her mother. She called like clockwork every year on the 31st at Midnight; talked her through the ten minutes or so that the world was exploding around her. This year was no different. She listened to her mother tell her how this was the year she was going to lose thirty pounds – they were going to do it together. And didn’t bother to reply.

She had in front of her right at this moment, a large cheeseburger, a bucket of chicken and soda. If she meant to have a new her in the new year; she was not off to a good start. Of course she could look at this as saying goodbye to 2013 in style before her new life started in 2014 but she wasn’t one for self delusion. Besides her friend Jennifer was coming for her in half an hour so they could go to that rave where she assured Tina she would meet the man of her dreams. Jennifer was very optimistic about things.

She said goodbye to her mother and then opened her closet wide, looking for something to wear. She could hardly find anything that suited her anymore. Maybe it was time she acknowledged her size fourteen figure had become a size sixteen and shop appropriately. There was that massive bonus she’d gotten for being the number one Sales Associate at Jules and Foster Securities and Assets. She could probably use some of that to buy some clothes that fit her new, more…luscious figure better.

“Tina!” Jennifer called from the hallway, clearly very drunk. “You in there or are you hiding under the bed?”

She used her keys to open Tina’s door and came stomping in. Her motorcycle boots creating enough noise that she was probably going to be hearing from Mrs. Fitz who lived below her and apparently had the ears of a bat. She wasn’t alone though. Hiro was with her, stepping delicately behind Jen as if to make up for her loudness.

“Hi Jen. Hi Hiro,” Tina said. “Happy New Year.”

“To you too darling,” Hiro said coming to kiss her perfunctorily on the cheek.

“Where’s Dai?” Tina asked.

Hiro shrugged, “He broke up with me. Said he was tired of being the ugly one in the relationship.”

Tina hesitated between commiseration and disbelief for a moment. “He didn’t,” she said at last.

“Yeah he didn’t. He had to go to Tokyo on business. And to see his family.”

“You didn’t wanna go with?”

“If I go with, then it’s serious. It’s me meeting his family and causing him to come out to them. It would mean he owns me forever.”

“Wow. That’s an…interesting way of looking at things.”

“You straight people don’t understand.”

“Oh I understand. I would just be like…thrilled if I met a guy who wanted me to meet his folks and change his life for me.”

“You say that now because it’s only a fairy tale. Wait till it happens for real.”

“Are you two done or shall I come back for you later?” Jennifer asked stamping her foot.

“We’re done,” Tina said turning away from her wardrobe.

“Ummm, you’re going like that?” Jennifer asked. That was why they were best friends. Jennifer was always honest with her, about everything.

“Yeah, what’s wrong with it?” she was wearing her black jeggings with a see through blouse.

“Ummm, I don’t know. It kind of says; ‘I’m hiding my body because I’m ashamed of being bootylicious and boobalicious,” she said.

“How am I hiding my body? I’m wearing jeggings for God’s sake.”

“Yeah. Exactly. Where’s that mini skirt I bought you when I went to Antigua?”

“Jen! Really?” Tina whined.

“Yeah really. Put it on now. The turtle neck shirt that hugs you everywhere and the ankle boots that lengthen your legs, short stuff.”

Tina moved to obey because it was easier than arguing with Jen. Besides she was a stylist; it was her job to dress people. So she knew what she was talking about.

As they were leaving the apartment Tina turned to Jen, “By the way, I was thinking of buying some new clothes. Can you recommend any good places for someone my size?”

“Yeah sure,” Jen said fishing in her bag for something and then handing her a white card with gold borders. “This is an excellent boutique. You’re sure to get some good stuff there.”

“You’re not offering to come with me?” Tina asked with down turned lips.

“I would honey, you know that. But I have that shoot in Barbados from tomorrow and who knows when I’ll be back?”

“Yeah, okay,” she sighed with resignation.

“I’d come with you,” Hiro said. “But soccer camp starts tomorrow. I’m not even supposed to be out partying tonight.”

“Yeah I know Hiro. That’s why I didn’t even ask you.”

The party was jumping and Jennifer had been right. There were lots of cute men. One of the waiters came up to her with a glass of champagne.

“Compliments of the gentleman at the VIP table,” he said holding it out to her. She took it reluctantly.

“Is it roofied?” she asked suspiciously.

The waiter laughed, “No. Jen would kill me.”

“Cool,” Tina said with a nod.

“The gentleman wanted to know if you would join him.”

Tina thought about saying no. Then she thought about what Jen would say if she found out she’d turned some guy down without so much as having a conversation. She thought about Hiro giving her that upside down smile of disappointment because she complained about not having true love but didn’t go for it.
