Deeply relieved by the change of topic, Trina went into the kitchen with Alexis trailing behind her. Yapping away nonstop like a puppy on her heels all she could do was listen but Alexis was starting to get on her last nerves. She took out her favorite bottle of wine and poured herself a healthy amount before going to lounge on the nearby sofa. “Are you asking me or are you telling me.”

“I haven’t made a final decision as to the date yet but I will soon.” Alexis went on unhurried. “I just thought you should know.”

“We’ve been over this before Alexis, I value my private space can’t you find somewhere else more suitable. It’s not like you lend a helping hand in keeping this house clean anyways.” Trina reminded her. “You are not going to throw a party here and leave me to clean up the mess after.”

“You think if I had the money I wouldn’t rent somewhere but I don’t have the funds. Trina would it hurt you to stop being so selfish and think of me just this once. You always find a way to complain and be negative. This is my special day and I want to celebrate it here with friends. You seem to forget this is my home too and I pay half the rent.

“Whatever. You are just going to be stubborn and do whatever you want despite my thoughts on the matter.”

“Somebody is not a happy camper, I still can’t believe you are making such a big deal over me throwing a party” Alexis said defensively.

“It’s the principle of the matter, it’s like you feel you can just walk all over me, like my thoughts don’t matter. You always do these crazy things without consulting my opinion and just expect me to go along with it.”

“I just don’t get it.”

“Yes. I see that you don’t, because you don’t listen to me! You just hear what you want to hear and if the conversation is not turning out how you want it to be you just go right ahead and tune me out.”

“This whole argument is ridiculous I can’t take it anymore. I’m going to supermarket to get some groceries. Need anything?”

“No.”

There was something in Trina’s voice that told Alexis there was more to the situation than getting upset over a party, it was probably just the nail on the coffin for a rough day for her friend. She knew her friend well enough to know that there was no point pushing for an explanation. Besides, this was always Trina’s problem if you wanted information out of her, you had to manipulate and dig deep. She could never be forthcoming, it was like she preferred everything in her past to be a big mystery which irked Alexis most of the time.

“On second thoughts bring me back a bottle of red wine. You know the one I love.”

Trina drinking wine alone and at home by herself. Interesting.

“Aren’t you going out with Damon tonight?” Alexis asked.

“Damon called to cancel on me earlier.” Trina said. She had never been blown off by a guy before.

“Well if that’s the case I’ll buy two and some snacks. We can just hang out like old times just the two of us before Damon came into the picture.”

“Oh, yeah that would be good. I’ve been so stressed out of late.”

“Did you remember to ask him for tickets to the Bryan McDonald exhibition? I expect that it was well attended. The sharks of the art world have been circling for years, waiting for Bryan to announce his next date. His collection of modern day decorative art is one of the finest in the country. No doubt it will be very expensive and go the highest bidder.”

“He said he’ll get us the tickets by the end of the week. Just be patient Alexis. You can get my tickets and take a date with. I would only be bored out of mind so I definitely don’t want to go.”

“Thanks a million Trina. I really appreciate.”

“Yeah, yeah now hurry up and go buy my goodies.”
