Chapter 3

Trina never did call him so he had to seek out her friend Alexis who was a popular groupie amongst the infamous starving artists. To find out what was up with Trina, for the life of him he couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t return any of his call.

The one time he got through she said, “I’m so sorry Damon, I promised my boss I would do overtime today.”

“How about tomorrow evening or the weekend.”

He wouldn’t take no for an answer he would clear his schedule ahead of time if he had to. Then the excuses stopped coming and his call and texts went unanswered. For some unknown reason he thought about her every day and night. He was going crazy thinking about her all the time. He felt like he was back in high school mooning over his first crush. Damon got all the details from Alexis. He felt he had no choice but to show up at her work place just to get a date. Before he arrived he had sent her several bouquets and even a sing o gram. Just to let her know how special she was to him.

Alexis informed him that her favorite movie was “Ten things I hate about you.” She always fantasized about being wooed by a guy the same way it happened in the show. He did the best he could but still got no response from her. So he showed up at her office and prayed she wouldn’t have him arrested. Alexis kept him updated about Trina. She was happy about the flowers and the gifts because it made her the envy of all the women in the office. When he first arrived she acted like she didn’t see him. When she realized that it was unusual to have such a wealthy patron of the arts loitering around the office she didn’t pretend not to see him anymore.

Unlike her the other women recognized him from the tabloids as one of the city’s most eligible bachelor. All were curious as to why such an impressive and important figure would take an interest in their small dinky office. Even her managers came out to say hello and hopefully get some business out of him. When Trina realized the day was over and he hadn’t moved from his seat she decided to put up the rest of her work for tomorrow and put the poor man out of his misery. She got up and walked past him, not too fast so that he could catch up to her.

He marveled at her single mindedness. He asked looking down at her. “Aren’t you the least bit curious as to how I found you?”

Trina rolled her eyes. “Not really.” He arches one of his eyebrows at her. “Okay then. You got my attention. What are you doing here?”

“Your friend Alexis gave me your number and told me exactly how to go about getting your attention.”

Trina stopped walking she was ticked off and exasperated by Alexis’ behavior how could she go behind her back and give out the address of her workplace to a total stranger. Was there no low Alexis would stoop to just to sell her dumb ass art?

“What did you say?” Trina felt like the world was conspiring against her. How dare Alexis sell her out for money. She really was nothing but a heartless gold digger. He went on unhurried.

“Her exact words were you haven’t been getting any lately and could use a good man in your life. So here I am volunteering.”

Trina felt her jaw go slack with shock.

“You don’t look thrilled.” He tried the only other ace he had up his sleeve. “Besides you owe me.” It was a gamble he was will to take.

“Exactly what do I owe?” He relaxed despite her being mad at her friend she was willing to play along, all he had to do was reel her in and he would have his catch of the day.

“You promised me that fateful night that you would allow me to take you to get ice cream. So here I am.”

“Well there is an ice cream parlor not too far from here if you don’t mind the walk.”

“Sure, not a problem.”

“Well this seems like the only way I can get rid of you, you can buy me a single scoop vanilla sugar cone. I’ll eat it fast then we can both be on our merry way.”

“Mmm… have it your way, which way to the store.”

Trina pointed in the direction and they walked side by side cutting through a park to get to the ice cream. It was a pretty scenic route. It had been a long time since Damon had done something as simple as just walking through the park with a beautiful woman at his side. He wanted to make conversation but he was afraid of saying the wrong thing and have her change her mind. So they walked in silence. Kids were playing with their dogs in the park and he caught a Frisbee that almost smacked Trina in the head.

She looked at him most grateful and his head swelled. He felt like a hero in her eyes. A small girl looking to be around six ran up to them. She muttered a quick “I’m sorry” before reaching for the red Frisbee and returned to play with her dog.

“She’s so cute,” Trina said. “She reminds me of myself when I was young.”

“I’m sure you were just as adorable maybe you could let me see some of your baby pictures someday.”

Trina nodded feeling flushed to the roots of her hair. She felt like she would never get used to a man especially one as charming as Damon paying her compliments. Finally they reached the ice cream parlor and Damon went in and ordered for the both of them. Meanwhile, Trina made herself comfortable on a bench under one of the huge umbrellas that dotted the entrance leading up to the ice cream parlor.

The seats were cushioned and comfortable and the ice cream would be just what she needed to cool down her body on a hot summer’s day. She couldn’t recall feeling so hot until Damon came to her workplace and it felt like just being around him the temperature had risen to over a 100 degrees. His nearness would probably cause her ice cream to run like a river she mused. In the store was crowded so she had some time to gather her thoughts or even make a run for it before Damon appeared with her ice cream. She declined the latter because she really got a kick out of Damon chasing her.
