Chapter 8

On that very same day she was told by her boss that she had finally been given the promotion over a rival secretary and she was to report in a week’s time to the head office to begin working. At time when she should have been elated with joy all she could think about was Damon. If someone had told her a couple months back that she would give up her career to get married and have a baby. She would never have believed them. She knew without a doubt that Damon had a hand in this, probably giving her boss a glowing review without her noticing. He had a way of charming people in such a subtle manner that you never knew you were caught up in his web of deceit until it was too late. No doubt her work also spoke for her competency but in the world of connections that was just an added bonus.

That’s how much faith the people in her workplace placed in her. She received many congratulations by phone and the internet but none of it could fill the hollow growing in her stomach at the thought of not having Damon in her life. Of course she felt it in her best interest to turn down the job. It was absolutely true being pregnant changes things. Stuff that used to be of the most important consequence no longer mattered. She just wanted to provide her child with a healthy environment to grow up in, ideally with the two parents in the baby’s life. Trina felt mutely miserable especially since she couldn’t find anything good on the television to help take her mind off her problems.

She couldn’t deny her feelings of sadness and grief written all over her face. This all felt so wrong, how she could deny herself his company. If he asked her to move to the end of the world with him, could she leave the only home she ever known, and her job behind? The answer in her mind was a resounding yes. Without a doubt in her mind she was in love with Damon. She thought about him twenty four seven. She fought jealousy in her head over fictitious women he hadn’t even met yet. There was no way she would let him go without letting him know about her feelings. She broke the ice first.

“I love you, Damon.”

His eyes lit up like she had never seen them before. Damon looked at her like he couldn’t believe this scenario was happening that she was really saying the words he longed to hear so badly. He looked at her as if she was a caged musical bird that sang better when it was free but still he would never let her go. He had been so afraid to say those words first. Terrified that she would run away like she had in the past. He had never felt as free from a burden as she had, finally uttered those lifesaving words to a dying man. It had taken her a long time to acknowledge how she really felt about him. He gave her one of his rarest of smiles. She made him feel like the happiest man alive.

“That’s all I wanted to hear. I love you more Trina.” He swept her into his open arms and breathed into her ears. Joy immersed her body and she suddenly felt weightless like gravity couldn’t touch her. Then slowly, he let her feet down to touch the ground, one arm wrapped around her waist while the other hand ran wildly through her hair. “And to think you tried to tell me that you didn’t believe in true love.”

“Something can’t be explained until you feel it for yourself, I believe that true love falls in that category.” Trina responded.

He smiled. “I never believed in love at first sight until that day in the gallery and it was like something between us just clicked when you stared at me with more interest than you did that Rembrandt. It was so hard to act nonchalant around you those two dates leading up to when we made love. I desired you so much but I didn’t want to rush you. I wanted the decision as to when we made love to be your own. You taunted my self-control, when every time I came on to you, still you kept your distance.”

She stared up at him lost in his gaze as he confessed his feelings for her, the sheepish of smiles graced his well kissed lips. Tears of joy started to stream down her face. She pinched herself to be sure that she wasn’t dreaming, she clasped her hands around his neck and gave him the sweetest of smiles, he had restored her faith in mankind. She leaned forward to kiss him and he reciprocated with a fervor that blew her mind, making her head dizzy with emotions. He drew her up close and she gave herself over to him, no longer worried about their future. Now she could relax and not have to worry about being alone or his leaving her side. She buried her face in the brown curve of his throat, glorying in his warmth, his heart beat co-mingled with hers in unison.

“I love you very much,” he told her, his loud voice booming and vibrant, saying it for the entire world to hear. “Marry me Trina, Marry me right away.”

She laughed and said “Right away?”

“Okay, maybe not right away I’ll need to procure a license but as soon as I can get a date it’s a done deal. I can’t think of anything I want more. Just think about how amazing we’ll be as family, when you give me the honor of allowing me to dote on you and our child with nothing but love for the rest of our lives.”

She figured Damon would always seem far out of her league, but as long as he wanted her in his life, she was there to stay. She was officially hopelessly in love for the first time in her life. Alexis was always happy whenever Trina invited her on shopping sprees courtesy of Damon he was forever grateful to her for saving the life of his future wife and unborn child, his family, his world. He had connections all over the world, Alexis had only to name them and he made sure that she could walk through their doors with her head held high and talk business. Alexis had genuine talent but he felt she needed more tutoring arranged for her to get training with one of the world’s best painters to date. It would require leaving the country but Alexis promised she would fly out once the baby was born.

Damon painted a portrait of his vast trading empire and it put her mind at rest that her child wouldn’t have to know the struggle their mother went through as a child. Despite Damon’s wealth they were just like any other couple in love. She had no doubts as to where they stood. She didn’t miss working and had found a new passion writing stories. Damon was such a sweetheart he even read them and gave constructive criticism from a male perspective that made her characters even more refreshing. What she loved most about Damon was that he was most supportive of all her efforts. If she said she wanted to bungee jumping he would be there to video record it. They put her Grandmother’s house up for sale it was a painful decision to make but she felt at home wherever Damon was and it held too many bitter memories.
