“Don’t act like you care about me when you don’t know the first thing about me.”

Damon stiffened, the lines on his handsome face were drawn and tense. Damon ran his hand through his hair and down his face in a defeated motion. The he inhaled sharply. His face was so tense that every muscle in his powerful face throbbed with desire. It was amazing how even when he was angry he could still want her.

“You need to calm down the doctors said that you being under stress wasn’t good for the health of the baby.” Damon raised a hand as if to ward off her anger. “Now isn’t the time for us to be arguing. For once let us both stop being selfish and think about the health of our baby.”

“How dare you turn that patronizing tone on me? I’m not one of your minions that do your bidding.”

Damon almost shouted in response. Trina forever made him feel like he was banging his head against a brick wall.

“As usual you missed the point I was trying to make and keep twisting every word I say negatively.” His harsh facial features were flushed under his dark skin as he spoke. He suddenly felt very tired as if the weight of the world rested upon his shoulders. “Trina why does every conversation we have need to turn into a battle of wills. Why can’t you accept that I care about both you and the baby? I understand I didn’t get you pregnant under the best of circumstances. I’m hoping that you will give me the opportunity to be both a part of you and my child’s life. I not only have the means but the determination to provide our family with the leadership it needs to go in the right direction. I promise to be the man, the friend, the lover, the father whatever you need I will provide it and stand firmly by your side if you will only give me the chance to do so.”

He felt drained every time he thought of how unhappy she seemed since getting pregnant and it felt like there was nothing he could do about it. From meeting Trina for the first in his history of relationships the roles were reversed. He was the more loving and affectionate person and it amused him that she found great pleasure in teasing him about it in an amicable way.

She didn’t want for him to get under her skin and she didn’t want him to take her for granted it was a quandary of sorts and enough to give her a migraine that no Advil could help. She had to remember why she invited him here. The fact that he turned up meant something, he didn’t have to. She knew how much he wanted a child. He had enough influence that he could declare her an unfit mother and take her child away from her. She shook her head. She needed to focus and stop imagining all the negative possibilities that could happen.

She heard him talking but wasn’t listening to whatever he was rambling on about. When he looked at her as if expecting a response. She asked him to repeat his question. He was asking her to consider spending her bed rest and vacation at his family home. She surprised herself when she said yes.

When the nurse came in to inform him that visitation hours were over he kissed her on the forehead and tenderly brushed away a tear from her eyes. He said he would have Alexis pack a few essentials and as soon as the doctor gave the ok to leave they would be on their way. He was ushered out of the room by the head nurse and she found herself drifting to sleep not long after. When she woke up Alexis was sitting by the side of her bed reading a book.

“Don’t you have work to do?”

“I haven’t even opened my mouth and already you are trying to get rid of me. How are you feeling?”

“Much better, it is amazing how rest does wonders for the human body.”

“I’m glad you are feeling better. It makes it much easier for me to apologize about my behavior, on reflection I was out of line and I truly regret my acts. I didn’t mean to drive you this far. I am so sorry this happened to you.”

“It’s not your fault Alexis, I am guilty of neglecting the needs of my body and it was only a matter of time before I collapsed. I was so fortunate to have you by my side, your quick thinking saved my life. Thank you so much for looking out for me Alexis.”

Tears well up in Alexis’ eyes as she hugged her friend while trying not to disturb the tubes attached to her body.

“There is something else Alexis, I found out I am pregnant.”

Alexis’ eyes widened. “Does Damon know, you are going to tell him right?”

“I already have. He confirmed my worst fears by asking me to marry him. I had to politely decline, I wasn’t going to marry a man I barely know. However, once my sojourn in the hospital is over I have agreed to spend some time with him in the country at his family home. Hopefully we can find a way to make things work without me having to surrender my independence. You know how much having control of my own life is important to me.”

“Maybe you should change the way you are looking at things.”

“What do you mean?”

“You need to rid yourself of the belief that you are unlovable. Which is why I feel you have that driving need to cling to your independence so much. I have seen you give, provide, and take care of other people with a selflessness that is commendable but when someone wants to return the favor to you it is like you reject them by instinct. You feel like you have lost what is most desirable about yourself. You feel like Damon is going to resent all he has done for you and later get critical of you when that is not the case at all. It’s like if things are going so well for the both of you it must be too good to be true and you do your best to sabotage the relationship before it even gets started.”
