Chapter 6

Trina learned she had passed out while in a heated argument with Alexis. Alexis had panicked and called 911. Alexis had inadvertently saved her life by having Trina rushed to the hospital. Alexis was freaking out until the doctor informed her that Trina’s condition was stable. She should go home and rest. Trina had no next of kin so Alexis was the closest thing she had to family. Alexis left her phone number with hospital and made them promise to call her should Trina take a turn for the worse. They couldn’t stop Alexis from fretting but they tried alleviate her mind as much as they could. They would run some more tests, Trina was in safe hands. Alexis can go home and get some rest and stop pacing the hospital corridors.

Trina finally opened her eyes after some much needed rest. She realized that she wasn’t in her own bed and tried not to panic. She felt like she was too weak to care as she had an IV tube in her hand and nose. She felt like she was in a daze as the moments leading up to her present time in the hospital assaulted her. She had just been so busy at work she often skipped meals. She took her work home with her and the stress of the job and dealing with Alexis’s stupidity took a toll on her body and she collapsed literally. It had never happened before and she prayed it wouldn’t happen again. Her mind was so filled with thoughts she didn’t hear when the doctor came in until he stood directly over her bead.

He introduced himself as Dr. Parker, told her that she passed out last night and had been in the hospital ever since. He said her roommate had called the ambulance that rushed her to the hospital. She couldn’t help but listen as he droned on about her ordeal. Dr. Parker was of average height and non-descript features. She couldn’t determine his exact age but he looked to be younger than her as he had one of those baby faces. He looked like the classic example of a doctor with his pristine white overall and shiny silver stethoscope hanging loosely around his neck.

He looked tired and worn out, the embodiment of an overworked doctor providing service in a crowded public hospital. His voice was high pitched and nasal, it grated on her nerves. Trina struggled to pay attention as she grasped the seriousness of the situation. She put herself in a bind when she wasn’t eating right and taking care of herself properly. Her ears perked up when she heard the word baby, her eyes shot up to the roof the same time as her body. She was now sitting upright in the hospital bed and her heartbeat was racing. He had her full attention now as he went into full detail as her body collapsed from all the undue strain she was putting it through. She was pregnant and her body was working hard to give the baby all the nourishment it needed.

The good doctor must have felt like he was having a conversation with himself because Trina remained unresponsive. She sat on the hospital bed watching the doctor’s lips as they moved and not making a sound. She marveled at his extraordinary words.

“As a pregnant woman, you need more water than the average person, since water plays an important role in the healthy development of your baby. Water helps to form the placenta, which is what your baby relies on to receive nutrients during pregnancy. Water is also used to form the amniotic sac later in your pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to avoid dehydration during pregnancy.”

Her body was being used as a vessel to carry newborn life within her womb sure that was a great thing. When the doctor wrapped up his monologue by asking if she understood all he had said or had any questions she nodded her yes and indicated with her hands that she had no questions as she felt bereft with speechlessness. She understood alright she was pregnant with Damon’s child it could only be him as she hadn’t slept with anyone else.

The doctor made the whole situation sound simple but life for Trina was far from it. He asked her if there was anything else she needed. She asked him to hand her the bag Alexis left by the stand it contained her cell in it. When he complied she told him not to worry she was fine. She couldn’t help but wonder who she was trying to fool. Only herself. He must have been pleased that she finally found her voice and could speak. He informed her that he was willing to assist her in any way that he could she need only ask. He decided that he would keep her one more day for observation just make sure that she and the baby were healthy and then he would release her.

He couldn’t understand why she wasn’t jumping for joy at her age. He asked if there was anybody she wanted the hospital to call to come and visit like maybe the baby’s father. She gave him the evil eye and he laughed. His pager went off and he politely excused himself and was off to his next patient. What a nosy doctor. Even though she hadn’t detected any meanness in his comment she still felt it was unnecessary. The nurses adored him and said she was fortunate to have one of the country’s best doctor looking after her and her babe she should be grateful to be in his care as he was always busy. He might be young and a bit green around the edges but he knew his stuff and came highly recommended.

She was pregnant and under the circumstance short of terminating the baby’s life there was nothing she could do but accept it. She couldn’t help but contemplate the right time to tell Damon. How about never? Her stomach fluttered at the thought. She glanced at her reflection in the mirrored wall as she moved around on the lumpy hard mattress trying to find that unattainable snug spot. In a few months she would lose her shape and be slender for how much longer? She wondered, with a growing sense of elation tinged with slight concern. That was the least of her problem back to the matter at hand should she tell Damon she was pregnant or wait until their child graduated from university.
